The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved 15 Federal Colleges of Education as degree awarding institutions including FCE Abeokuta, beginning from the current academic session of 2025/2026 calendar
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa who announced this on Thursday , during the 50th anniversary of Federal College of Education, Abeokuta and 26th combined convocation of the institution for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 graduating sets , also disclosed that FCE Abeokuta had been given approval to run degree programme in 31 courses with capacity to admit 2,000 students
The Minister who was represented by Director of Colleges of Education in the ministry, Dr. Uche Uba , equally revealed that 8,500 students are currently benefiting from various scholarship initiatives of the federal government
A total sum of N161.9billion also disbursed to to 864,798 beneficiaries across 263 public institutions as at February, 2026 by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND)
He charged the graduands to see teaching not just as a profession but a calling, calling on them to make good use of knowledge acquired in the college to improve on the quality of teaching and learning in the society
Provost of the college, Dr Rafiu Soyele who listed several completed and ongoing capital projects, called for public support to address challenges facing the institution including the licensing of FCE Radio outfit , modern students accommodation , upgraded laboratories and workshops, improved security system, enhanced sporting facilities as well as further expansion of academic and medical infrastructure
"We are requesting our Honourable Fellow of the College and Chairman, Board of Trustees of TETFUND, His Excellency, Right Hon.Aminu Masari to please facilitate the construction of state of the art undergraduate three (3) story, twelve (12) lecture rooms complex with adequate appurtenances for Centre of Excellence. This will definitely spread your footprint on the sands of time across the country ", he appealed
The Provost also solicited for the support of Governor Dapo Abiodun and former governors to further consolidate infrastructural growth of the college while appreciating the assistance of individuals including Dr. Gideon Osi, Dr. Muyiwa Odegbami and Mrs Oluyemi Lemo and support of various set of Alumnus and National Alumni
He revealed that a total of 600 fresh students would be formally admitted as first set into the various degree programmes of the college, beginning from Monday February 16 for the 2025/2026 academic session
Similarly Chairman of the College's Eight Governing Council, Alex Oritsegbeyiwa Eyengho , assured that the college under his leadership would continue to deepen ICT-driven teaching and learning: expand relevant academic programmes , strengthen partnerships with universities and other relevant international bodies, industries and international institutions and promote research, innovation and community engagement
Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu on behalf of Governor Abiodun assured of the government support for infrastructural growth of the college, while appreciating the physical transformation within the FCE Abeokuta for the past 50 years and commitment to producing quality teachers for the education sector in the country
Those honoured with Fellowship Award for their outstanding contributions to the College and education sector included former governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari, Chief Ayiri Emami who announced instant N20million for infrastructural growth of the institution and Dr. Ronke Soyombo who pledged free examination registration for 60 products of the college writing qualification examination of the Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria
Also conferred with Fellowship Award, Mrs Titilola Akinlawon SAN, Omooba Yemisi Shyllon, Engr Umar Ganduje who promised Federal Government intervention for electricity project within the college and the Ogun State Chairman of the All Progressive Congress APC, Chief Yemi Sanusi who pledged government support to compliment the infrastructural growth in the college
A total of Two thousand, two hundred and eighty-five (2,285) full time students and One hundred and six part -time students were awarded Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) of the college while Adeleke Opeyemi Mercy and Ariyo Ayomide emerged overall best graduating student for the 2022/2023 set and 2023/2024 set respectively
The Olowu of Owu-Kingdom, Oba (Prof) Saka Adelola Matemilola ,Olu of Osiele, Oba Williams Olowoyo and heads of various tertiary institutions were among dignitaries that attended the historic ceremony
