Ogun State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has stressed the need for both the Federal Government and State Governments to immediately begin the process of upward review of the current N70,000 minimum wage to between N150,000 and N200,000 to enable workers cope with economic realities in the country
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola who made the call during a news conference in Abeokuta, the State capital, also appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to kindly extend the N10,000 palliative introduced by his administration beyond the three months of April -June, saying workers still need it to cushion the effects of high cost of transportation arising from increase in pump price of petrol
Benco-Ademola applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governors of the 36 States on the proposed review of the minimum wage to N100,000 , calling on them to look inward for the possible implementation of the monthly salary structure
"I want to use this opportunity to charge all the states of the federation to look inwardly and see the importance of this review which is calling for action, the economy is hitting very hard on workers in the country, we are all aware that things are not the same way they were over the years", he stated
The upward review of the minimum wage according to him, will ensure better working condition and improved service delivery to the people
Benco-Ademola expressed confidence that the Nigeria as a country is not poor and has what it takes to implement the proposed monthly minimum wage of between N150,000 and N200,000
He was ever grateful to the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration for the improved welfare packages for workers
The State NLC Chairman equally called on the President Tinubu's administration to look at how to revive the economic situation in the country, particularly the increase in the pump price of fuel
He also lauded President Tinubu, National Assembly as well as the military and other security agencies in the joint operations leading to the eventual freedom of the pupils and teachers abducted by armed bandits in schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State
Benco-Ademola described the rescued of the victims as a testament to the Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure safety of Nigerians .
"We will continue to do our bit as Nigeria Labour Congress NLC in ensuring peace and stability in the land , we are grateful to National Assembly and all those who contributed to the success of the operations ", he stated
Similarly he pledged the continued support of organized labour to the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration in Ogun State to continue to contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of the State
