The Conference of Registrars of Polytechnics in Nigeria (COREG) has honoured the Rector of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul, in recognition of his leadership, administrative support and commitment to advancing technical education in Nigeria.
The award was presented during COREG’s 94th General Meeting hosted by YABATECH in Lagos, an event that drew registrars, past administrators and key stakeholders from polytechnics and colleges of technology across the country.
Presenting the award, COREG Chairman, Mr. Gabriel Awe, described the choice of YABATECH as host institution as deliberate, noting that the Council had adopted a strategy of rotating its meetings among member institutions to strengthen collaboration, promote best practices and expose members to effective leadership models.
He acknowledged that financial constraints had limited such engagements in the past but said reports of discipline, prudent management and progressive leadership under the Rector influenced the decision to convene the meeting at YABATECH.
“We sincerely appreciate the Rector for opening his doors to us, especially at a time when resources are limited. His support reflects his commitment to institutional growth and collaboration,” Awe said.
He described registrars as the “life-wire of institutions,” reaffirming COREG’s dedication to discipline, resilience, professionalism and constructive engagement with rectors and management teams nationwide.
According to him, the association provides a platform for sharing experiences, harmonising administrative practices and interfacing with government agencies on policy matters affecting the polytechnic sector.
Delivering the Rector’s address at the opening ceremony, the Deputy Rector (Academics), Dr. (Engr. )Ismail Badmus, lauded COREG for sustaining a strong professional platform over the years.
He stressed that issues such as digitalisation of registry operations, enhancement of student information systems, staff welfare and continuous professional development require collective attention.
He noted that resolutions from the meeting would strengthen registry practice and further enhance technical and vocational education nationwide.
Responding to the honour, the Rector expressed appreciation to COREG, describing registrars as indispensable to governance and institutional stability.
He commended the association’s emphasis on dialogue and cooperation and endorsed ongoing efforts to establish a recognised professional body for registrars, noting that it would enhance welfare, recognition and standards across the sector.
The Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, represented by the South-West Zonal Director, Mr. Ayo Aroge, described registrars as critical drivers of institutional administration and assured participants of NBTE’s continued support.
Also speaking, former COREG Chairman and former YABATECH Registrar, Mrs. Charity Amakpabor, urged registrars to uphold fairness, dignity and professionalism in their day-to-day administration, stressing that their actions directly impact institutional stability.
In her welcome address, YABATECH Registrar, Mrs. Henrietta Adebola Badejo, said the conference came at a critical period when tertiary institutions are navigating rapid changes in policy implementation, regulatory compliance, records management and digital transformation.
“This conference is both timely and relevant. It challenges us to rethink our practices, embrace innovation and reaffirm our commitment to professionalism, accountability and service delivery,” she said.
The 94th General Meeting featured paper presentations and strategic deliberations focused on strengthening registry operations, deepening digital transformation and promoting administrative excellence across Nigeria’s polytechnics and colleges of technology.
