Ogun State wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers is asking Governor Dapo Abiodun to consider the implementation of the law which increases the retirement age for teachers and Education officers to 65 from the current age of 60 years and extends years in service to 40 years from the existing 35 years in service
The State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Akinola Abiodun who made the request.on Thursday in Abeokuta during the celebration of this year's Teachers Day, said the law had been gazzated by the Federal Government of Nigeria and domesticated in 19 of the 36 States in the country
"The Union urges Your Excellency to consider the implementation of 65/40years extension of service years for Teachers and Education Officers in the State which is a product of the law"
"The law had been gazetted by the Federal Government and its implementation is already making waves across the Federation as we now have nineteen (19) States that had already domesticated the law for Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachersand Education Officers
in Nigeria. Gateway Teachers await Your Excellency pronouncement on this today after all due diligence had already been done for the following reasons"
He explained that the law would enable newly employed teachers who is 30years old to spend five more years in the service to justify government's investments on such teachers before retiring from the public service
The NUT chairman said implementation of the law would enable government to retain best hands in the system for tutelage and mentoring of the upcoming
Teachers.
The law, according to him, will reduce State Government expenses, since those retiring are actually going to
collect pension for the proposed years without adding anyother value again.
"It will allow Teachers to justify Government investment on training rather than taking appointment with private schools that didn’t add any value to their knowledge.", he stated
"These and many others we felt, Your Excellency should oblige us extension of our service years as this is the wish of Nigerian Teachers.Your Excellency, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT)'", Abiodun pleaded
The union also stressed the need accessible special loan in terms of car/housing loan for Teachers in both Primary and! Secondary Schools in the State.
"The proposed long term loan
at a single digit interest rate will complements Teachers efforts and boosts their morale to do more as the Teachers we need", the union demanded
NUT blamed the shortage of teachers on JAPA syndrome, meaning the increasing rate at which teachers are leaving the country, is creating more vacancies in the teaching without a commensurate recruitment to fill the vacancies created.
The union lamented that 300 teachers would be retiring from the service without replacement for them, which is making classrooms almost empty
"Therefore, since a man’s word is his bond, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) hereby proposes that Ogun State Teaching Experience Acquisition Channel (Ogun TEACh) interns that Your
Excellency employed in 2021 (Teacher Dapo) to understudy their senior colleagues had completed their internship. The Union hereby present them to Your Excellency today 5th October, 2023 as graduands to be granted permanent appointment as promised.
Governor Abiodun in his immediate response, approved the immediate employment of 1,000 teachers from Ogun Teach Scheme and another recruitment of 2,000 fresh applicants into the Teachers internship programme
