Ogun State Government has charged youths to explore opportunities available in fish farming to become gainfully employed, describing fish farming as a veritable platform capable of making them self-employed, especially in the prevailing unemployment rate in Nigeria.
The State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe, made the call in Abeokuta during the opening ceremony of a three-week training on Fish farming Business organised by the Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) Abeokuta in partnership with German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ-SKYE).
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director, Industrial Promotion in the Ministry, Engr. Kehinde Akintomide, said going into fish farming, apart from helping youths to become gainfully employed, could help youths contribute to the industrial development of the State through the provision of relevant products in the fish value chain which are useful for industries operating in the State.
She commissioner lauded the TIC and GIZ on the three-week programme geared towards training of 40 youths and women between the ages of 15 and 35 on catfish farming as well as empowering participants with start-up kits, , adding that the training would contribute to helping unemployed youths become entrepreneurs.
Declaring the training open, the Center Manager, TIC, Abeokuta, Mr. Ifelayo Adejoro charged participants to utilise opportunities provided by the training to improve themselves, assuring that all was set for practical sessions which would help them learn about latest trends in fish farming.
In his address, Technical Advisor, Employment Promotion, Skills Development for Youth Employment (SKYE) GIZ, Mr. Amile Terlumun, said the training was organised in partnership with the TIC to help unemployed youths become gainfully employed, saying the Agency had worked on providing the right ambience for a successful training and empowerment programme.
Also speaking, two of the participants, Miss Osiniyi Abolanle and Mr. Qudus Bello lauded the organisers while assuring that the knowledge garnered would be used to start fish farming business
