Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT has called for legalization of the resucitated offices of Principal- General and Head-Teacher General in the Ogun State public service, as teachers in the state join others across the country to celebrate the 2022 year's World Teacher's Day this Wednesday
Secretary of the State wing of NUT, Comrade Samson Oyelere who made the call while featuring on a live radio programme in Abeokuta on Tuesday monitored by Edu-biznews, explained that providing a legal frame-work for the establishment of the both offices would compel successive administration to recognize the offices as part of structure in the education sector
Oyelere who expressed the union's appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for the resucitation of the two offices abolished by the immediate past Ibikunle Amosun's administration, added that legalizing both offices would enable teachers who get to the peak of their career in public service to enjoy similar benefits and allowances just as Permanent Secretary on the same Grade Level 17 in the core civil service
On the complaint of financial constraints by some of the governors in implementing the Special Salary Scale for teachers approved by President Mohammedu Buhari, he revealed that the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission was working out modalities to make it easy for the each of the State Governments to pay an improved salary package to teachers
Reacting to the Federal Government's implementation of the Harmonized Retirement Age for teachers which provides for an increase in the retirement age from 60 to 65 years and extension of service period from 35 to 40years, Oyelere expressed the union's optimism that the Governor Abiodun would announce the commencement of the new Harmonized Retirement Age Law during the celebration of this year's World Teacher's Day in the state, just as some of the states already enjoying the benefits of the law
Speaking on the theme of the 2022 celebration," The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers", the union called on the state to recruite more teachers in addition to the existing 2,000 new teachers recruited under the temporarily Ogun Teach Scheme for both primary and secondary schools, stressing the need to engage more than 5,000 teachers approved by the governor under the scheme for teachers to play critical role in the transformation of the sector
The State NUT scribe lauded the initiative of the Abiodun's administration at digitalizing the education sector describing it as the best in the country
"Ogun State is a pacesetter among other states because every operation in the education sector is fully digitized" , he stated
The union however called on the State Government to do more to further improve on the welfare of teachers and the education sector in its entirety
