Nigeria's former president and Balogun of Owu-Abeokuta kingdom, Olusegun Obasanjo has pleaded with the people not to distract the new Olowu ,Oba (Prof. )Saka Adelola Matemilola, who is preparing to be in seclusion (Ipebi) as part of the traditional rites
Obasanjo made the plea on Monday, during his maiden meeting with the Olowu-elect and representatives of Owu kingdom including high chiefs
Chief Doja Adewolu, Chief Niyi Adegbenro, former Chief of Staff, Shuaib Salisu, wives as well as children and well-wishers amongst others at his Ita-Oyalode resident in Abeokuta.
Ogun State Government five days ago gave its approval for selection of Matemilola as next Olowu to replace Oba Adegboyega Dosumu who joined his ancestors last year
The former president explained that it was mandatory for the new king to meet with all representatives of Owu- people before his formal installation
The Prime Minister of Owu assured Oba Matemilola of his continuous support whenever it is needed.
He explained that government given approval validates the selection process.
His words,"The gathering today is part of the process and presentation of government letter of approval".
"This is the fastest time that a traditional ruler in the kingdom will die and a new one elected"
Obasanjo described the Owu culture as unique, considering the selection process of choosing the new king
"When the late king died, the Owu kingdom did what has never happened in Owu kingdom; Christians, Muslims and traditionalists were gathered to celeberate the life of the late monarch."
According to Obasanjo, the State Government wants the king to meet the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo after which he will be going into seclusion (Ipebi).
He appreciated God and other chiefs that particiapated in the whole selection process and ensuring hitch free traditional excercise
