The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO has begun its online training for teachers in Nigeria and four other English speaking countries in West Africa, under the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) project, aimed at equipping them with the required digital skills to teach English Language, Mathematics and other other science and art subjects
Secretary of the Ogun State wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT, Comrade Samson Oyelere, made this known in a circular obtained by Edu-Biznews in Abeokuta on Sunday in Abeokuta
State Coordinators of the project in the country have been asked to inform registered teachers with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria TRCN, to ensure wide participation of teachers in the self-paced online training which is within framework of the teacher training component of the project developed by the UNESCO and International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa IICBA
TRCN in the circular was also directed to broadcast the information to teachers on its data base, saying the training is free of charge when they log on to the website: www.imaginelearning.africa and click on Nigeria to register for the training which ends on the 28th of February, 2022
"The training modules, which were developed by UNSCO IICBA and validated by experts in all five countries, including Nigeria, are designed to equip teachers with the skills and capacity required to use digital technologies to teach the following subjects:
Physics, Geography, English,Biology, Chemistry, History, Mathematics, STEM,Instructional Design and Digital Skills", the circular stated
"It is expected that after completing the modules, the teachers will be able to create digital content for learners to ensure that teaching and learning can continue in the event of another pandemic lockdown; out of school children can get access to quality education via digital technologies; and blended learning teaching methods can be employed to mitigate challenges observed in teaching large classes, etc."
"Upon successful completion of each module and scoring of at least 80% on end of module assessment, each teacher will be issued a certificate of completion digitally in recognition of completing the training. It is expected that every teacher completes the module for the subject she/he is teaching as well as the Digital Skills and Instructional Design modules; teachers in the sciences and mathematics will do the STEM module as well", the circular concluded
