NNL: Gateway Utd, Ijebu Utd In Impressive Start




Gateway United Football Club of Abeokuta and Ijebu United began their campaign for promotion in the second tier Nigeria National League NNL with a two-nil win in the league opener in the 2021/2022 season

Ogun State Government owned Gateway United dismissed  Campos FC of Owerri on Saturday in the match played at the MKO Abiola Stadium Abeokuta while in Group B2, debutants Ijebu United defeated Calabar Rovers by the same margin at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode 

The Toyin Ayinla tutored side took an early lead in the encounter, when Haruna Salifu tapped home from close range within just six minutes of play

Sulaimon Ogunleye's effort inside the box inched away from target in the 18th minute as the home team looked to extend the lead just as a freekick was awarded at the edge of the box after a foul on Sulaimon Ogunleye. 

Resultingly, Samuel Akintola's free kick was deflected off target.

Five minutes after half hour mark, Sunkanmi contested and won the ball in the box, pulled a lovely cross but Haruna Salifu failed to connect to it. 

Two minutes into the second half, Sanni Jamiu came close to doubling the lead with a free kick which went slightly over the bar. 

Ogunronbi Hawwal eventually grabbed the second goal in the 62nd minute for the homeside, after curling a beautiful low effort into the bottom left corner from 25 yards 

Gateway boys later reduced to 10 men after goalscorer, Salifu Haruna was sent off following a second bookable offence.  

Six minutes before regulation time, Olanrewaju Francis  came in for Sanni Jamiu in a tactical substitute

Araromi Ibukun was impressive in goal for the home team as he deflected the ball over the bar , to deny the visitors who were trying to take advantage of their numerical strength to reduce the tally  

Speaking with sportswriters after the tie, Coach Ayinla who was highly elated for winning the first match of the season , however promised to correct lapses noticed in  the match ahead of the team's next encounter on the road against Giant Brillars  in Enugu on the 19th of February, 2022.

Other matches played  in Group B 1,
Ikorodu City Giant Brillars played a goalless draw at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos ,Osun Utd won two/nil  against Ekiti Utd at  OAU Stadium in Ife while Vandrezzer FC and Bendel Insurance played a goalless draw

In Group B2 matches,Nnewi United  and Crown FC played a goalless draw at Oba Stadium while FC ONE Rocket narrowly defeated Apex Krane by a lone-goal at  Next of Champions Pitch.

El-Kanemi Warriors and Sokoto United settled for a one-all draw at El-Kanemi Warriors Sports Centre in Maiduguri in Group A1 of the league, ABS defeated Yobe Desert Stars 2-0 in Ilorin Township Stadium while EFCC defeated  Zamfara United by a slim 2-1.

In Group A2, Malumfashi fc  defeated  Road Safety by a lone goal in Township Stadium Malumfashi, DMD FC  andDoma Utd played a one-all draw at  El-Kanemi Warriors Complex in Maiduguri,
Green Beret fc narrowly defeated 1-0  Adamawa Utd by a lone goal at Doguma Township Stdium in Zaria while Jigawa Holden Stars  defeated J.M Liberty fc 2-0 at Kazaure Stadium
