Ogun State Government has flagged off a National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), training programme across its Government Technical Colleges, as part of efforts to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and produce a globally competitive skilled workforce
The programme, themed ‘Strengthening Skills Development through the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF)’, was flagged off at the Government Technical College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, described the NSQF programme as an investment in the human capital and economic future of Ogun State, expressing confidence that its effective implementation would further enhance the quality, recognition and relevance of skills development across the State.
The Commissioner stressed that skills development must go beyond classroom attendance, noting that learners must be equipped with practical competencies that could be confidently demonstrated in real-life work situations.
Arigbabu, therefore charged Principals, instructors, facilitators, trainers and assessors to ensure that the programme was implemented professionally, with commitment and strict adherence to required standards.
Addressing the trainees, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Alhaja Moriamo Oloko, noted that the programme served as an opportunity to invest in their future, urging them to remain committed, practise continuously, observe safety regulations and develop on it, while adhering to the work ethics expected of skilled professionals.
She emphasised that acquired skills could provide young people with opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods, while also contributing to the economic development of Ogun State and Nigeria.
In her welcome address, the Acting Executive Secretary, Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB), Mrs. Mojisola Adenowo, said the initiative marked another significant step towards improving the quality of skills development and equipping young people with competencies relevant to the demands of the modern workplace.
Adenowo, noted that the establishment and activities of the Ogun State Skills Qualification Board (OGSQB), had provided an additional platform for strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the State.
She said the NSQF had provided a structured pathway for individuals to acquire, demonstrate, recognise and certify their skills, thereby strengthening the link between skills acquisition, certification, employability and productivity.
The Acting Executive Secretary further called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, development partners, private technical institutions and industry stakeholders to make TVET more responsive to the needs of the labour market.
She appreciated the contributions of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ogun State Skills Qualification Board, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Industrial Training Fund (ITF), GIZ, industry partners and other stakeholders supporting TVET development in the State.
The programme would be implemented across all the Government's Technical Colleges across the State.
