Ogun State Government says the admission policies into its flagship Secondary Schools is purely based on merit so as to encourage brilliant performances among learners and to sustain the leading records of the schools.
The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu gave the assurance in Abeokuta while receiving an Award as the ‘Best Commissioner for Education’ in Nigeria by the Education Information Society of Nigeria.
He enumerated the structures that were put in place in those schools to achieve a befitting standard which included; placement of maximum of 60 learners per classroom, experience principals, adequate furniture, digital devices and conducive environment, saying that when merit is encouraged, the outcome is always outstanding.
He disclosed in the last six years the Ministry had succeeded in its decision to discourage placing barriers before brilliant students, even if some of them were not well connected, advocating that such untoward behaviours must be avoided, if the much touted desired results were to be achieved.
"The day we started putting merit above mediocrity, that day we begin to get it right. I want to appreciate you as a group for working to ensure equality and equity within the school system," Arigbabu said.
Speaking, the Director-General of the Information Society, Mr. Lawal Bello, noted that the visit was to publicly identify with the Commissioner for the transformation brought into the State education sector, saying the performance of students during the last West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was a clear indication that Prof. Arigbabu has performed tremendously well.
