Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State and the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria, CIoD, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to train leaders and business owners.
The agreement focuses on sharpening leadership skills, strengthening leadership capacity, promoting corporate governance, and improving board effectiveness.
It also includes the activation of innovative development programmes, opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas, and value-based research to drive advocacy initiatives.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President and Chairman of Council of CIoD Nigeria, Otunba Adetunji Oyebanji, said the MoU provides a foundation for deeper collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
“These include leadership development, corporate governance education, professional capacity building, research, knowledge exchange, and other initiatives that will strengthen the competencies of present and emerging leaders,” he said.
He noted that for CIoD Nigeria, the partnership reflects an important responsibility to engage leaders early in their development.
“By strengthening the connection between academia and professional institutions such as CIoD Nigeria, we can expose students, academics and professionals to practical governance principles and leadership standards that will serve them throughout their careers,” Otunba Oyebanji added.
He expressed optimism that the partnership will create meaningful opportunities for both institutions through knowledge sharing, deeper governance awareness, professional development, and platforms for emerging leaders to interact with experienced directors, executives and governance professionals.
“Together we can develop leaders who are competent, ethical, accountable and committed to good governance, thereby strengthening businesses, educational institutions, public organisations and ultimately our nation,” he said.
“Today’s ceremony is important, but the true measure of its success will be in what we collectively build from it.”
Also speaking, Babcock University President/Vice Chancellor, Professor Afolarin Olutunde Ojewole described the MoU as a collaboration between two strong brands — one in academia and the other in professional director development.
The goal, he said, is to use the combined strength of both organisations to produce better directors and to expose students, especially graduate students, to the core concepts of corporate governance.
“With one memorandum of agreement with you all, we will be talking not only to one director, highly placed, but all in different significant areas of the economy of Nigeria,” he said.
“It will also be our opportunity to join along with the academy in challenging best practices around the world.”
The goal, he said, is for global institutions to recognize Babcock as a university with quality content they can be proud to associate with.
He explained that the partnership is also important for the kind of networks it will create for students.
Calling the MOU “one of the most strategic ever” in Babcock’s history, Professor Ojewole pledged the university’s commitment to the agreement. “We promise that we’ll do our end of the bargain.”
