President/Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State Professor Afolarin Olutunde Ojewole and stakeholders in Nigeria's health sector have called on governments to urgently prioritize policies that enhance nurses’ welfare, safety, and professional growth.
He emphasized that investment in nursing education directly strengthens national healthcare delivery.
The Vice-Chancellor who was speaking at the opening ceremony of Babcock University Teaching Hospital’s (BUTH) 2026 Nurses Week, themed “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses to Save Lives”, underscored the critical role nurses play in the healthcare ecosystem.
“Policymakers must include nurses in strategic healthcare conversations because they form the largest group in the care ecosystem. Our nursing program remains the best in Nigeria, and we are committed to modern nursing education, clinical exposure, research, digital competencies, simulation labs, and character-based training. We do not merely train nurses to earn certificates; we prepare them to save lives, transform communities, and restore dignity to healthcare,” he said.
Delivering the keynote address, Nurse Bernice Aketi, immediate past Director of Nursing, Lagos State Ministry of Health, represented by Dr. Okeseji Idowu, stressed the urgency of investing in nurses to safeguard the nation’s future.
“Nurses have been marginalized in some aspects while other healthcare workers enjoy more benefits. We must strengthen the nursing system internally. This year’s theme emphasizes that nurses, through safe environments, fair play, and leadership opportunities, will improve patient care and strengthen the global health system,” she noted.
Professor Titus Oyedele, Acting Chief Medical Director of BUTH, congratulated nurses for their dedication and urged continuous improvement.
“Excellence is not a destination but a journey,” he remarked.
Convener, Director of BUTH Nursing Services, Dr. Adeola Oyinloye, expressed gratitude to management for responding to nurses’ legitimate calls for institutional support.
She pledged continued advocacy for nurses’ welfare and professional advancement.
