Nigeria’s premier tertiary institution for technical and vocational education, Yaba College of Technology has matriculated 17,130 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, with a strong charge to them to demonstrate high level of discipline, academic excellence, entrepreneurship and total rejection of cultism and social vices.
Speaking at the colourful matriculation ceremony held at the institution in Lagos, the Rector of the College, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, described the event as the beginning of an exciting journey for the newly admitted students into what he called “Nigeria’s premier institution for technical and vocational education.”
The Rector disclosed that the matriculating students were selected from a total of 24,655 candidates who applied for admission into the institution for the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to him, 655 candidates applied for the B.Sc (Education) programmes, out of which 555 gained admission into the School of Technical Education. He added that 6,274 candidates applied for the Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, with 5,551 offered admission, while 17,726 candidates applied for the National Diploma (ND) programmes and 11,024 were admitted after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the institution’s screening exercise.
Dr. Abdul explained that the rigorous admission process was designed to ensure that only qualified and competent candidates were admitted into the institution.
Addressing the matriculating students, the Rector urged them to see themselves as future leaders, innovators and change-makers who would shape Nigeria’s technological and industrial development.
“Today marks a defining milestone in your lives. By this matriculation, you are formally admitted into a community renowned for excellence, innovation and the production of graduates who are academically sound, industry-ready and globally competitive,” he said.
He noted that graduates of Yabatech had continued over the decades to shape the nation’s technological and industrial landscape through innovation and professional excellence.
The Rector also highlighted the institution’s recent achievements under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the Federal Government’s approval for the conversion of the 78-year-old institution into a Technical and Vocational University marked a major milestone in the history of the college and in Nigeria’s drive for skills-based education and industrial development.
He said the institution had equally recorded significant progress in entrepreneurship development, digital infrastructure expansion, research advancement and industry collaboration.
Among the institution’s innovations, he cited the internationally recognised PlastoGas Hub project as evidence of Yabatech’s commitment to practical solutions and sustainable development.
Dr. Abdul further disclosed that the college had strengthened partnerships with leading organisations, secured research grants and continued to produce graduates equipped with entrepreneurial and technological skills required for national development.
He stressed that Yabatech remained committed to producing graduates who create opportunities rather than merely seeking employment.
The Rector advised the students to uphold the core values of the institution through discipline in appearance and conduct, dedication to academic work, participation in extracurricular activities and respect for religious and cultural diversity.
He reminded the students that regular attendance at lectures remained compulsory, noting that the institution and the National Board for Technical Education required a minimum of 75 per cent lecture attendance for students.
He also encouraged the fresh students to maximise the use of the institution’s workshops, laboratories, studios and ICT facilities in order to acquire practical and entrepreneurial skills that would make them globally competitive.
On security and campus ethics, the Rector warned against cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, bullying and other forms of indiscipline, stressing that any student involved in cult-related activities would face expulsion and possible prosecution.
“Cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, bullying and all forms of indiscipline have no place in Yabatech. Choose the path of honour,” he declared.
Dr. Abdul assured the students that the institution had functional student support structures, including counselling services, welfare committees, quality assurance units and student representation in major institutional committees.
He urged the matriculating students to remain focused and determined throughout their academic journey, adding that the nation looked up to the younger generation for solutions in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and sustainable development.
The event was attended by members of the Governing Council, representatives of the National Board for Technical Education, officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, principal officers of the college, members of the Academic Board, parents, guardians and other stakeholders in the education sector.
