NASU Warning Strike Disrupts Activities At WAEC Branches in Nigeria, May Take Toll On Conduct Of 2026 WASSCE

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational And Associated Institutions (NASU) on Thursday sustained its three-day warning strike in branches of the West African Examinations Council across Nigeria, to compel management of the council to respond to its demands 

The industrial action may be taking its toll on the smooth conduct of the ongoing conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates , despite the assurance given by the National office of the council in Yaba , Lagos 

Over 1.9 million candidates from 24,027 schools are participating in the examine 

In Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, workers blocked the main entrance to the WAEC office in protest against alleged shady recruitment interview practices and other unmet demands by the management of the council 

NASU with the backing of National Secretariat, had last week Tuesday given the Head of National Office of WAEC, Yaba, Lagos, a week notice to address the demands of the union, threatening to embark on a three-day warning strike beginning from Tuesday 12th May and Thursday 15th May, 2026, if the management failed to act as expected 

NASU in the notice signed by its General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi (JP) , dated 5th May , 2026, is asking the management of WAEC to resolve the following issues, including the suspension of the recent staff upgrade programme , imposition of minimum Net-pay Balance policy, unilateral constitution of investigative panels and reduction of West African Examinations Senior School Certificate WASSCE (SC) duration and punitive measures 

The union is also calling on the management of the examination council to resolve the issues of coordinated attempt to weaken the union through distortion of union membership, breach of seniority principle in appointment/ placement, incessant dismissals and disproportionate sanctions as well as examination for promotion and Indiscriminate recruitment of Examination Officers and Assistant Examination Officers 

National Secretariat of NASU, however urged the Management of WAEC to quickly resolve the issues stated in the notice amicably to avert the pending industrial action by workers 

"We have given the branches of NASU in WAEC this approval, hoping that within the next 7 days, from the date here on , your Management will do everything possible to avert the looming industrial unrest in WAEC, Nigeria", the union cautioned
