Organisation for Harmony and Peace (OHP), a Non-Governmental Organization has expressed concern over what it described as an alarming increase in the cases of domestic violence among couples in recent times in Nigeria, saying the ugly development poses a serious threat to family unity and societal stability.
President-General of the Organisation, Ustadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao raised the alarm on Wednesday in a statement made available to the media by the Director-General of Media, Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare
OHP according to the statement, is deeply troubled by the persistent rise in domestic violence, which continues to inflict emotional trauma, disrupt marriages, and negatively impact children who are direct or indirect victims of such unstable homes.
The NGO attributed the rising cases of domestic violence at various homes to lack of proper mentorship, guidance, and emotional intelligence
"We noted that many marital failures are often wrongly attributed to financial challenges, whereas the real issue lies in the lack of proper mentorship, guidance, and emotional intelligence"
"Sadly, many individuals enter into marriage without seeking professional counselling or fail to adhere to the guidance provided"
The Organization stressed that
Marriage should not be seen as a merely a social arrangement but a lifelong commitment that requires wisdom, patience, and continuous learning
"Experience and exposure matter, and no one is above learning from seasoned counsellors and mentors,”
The Organisation for Harmony and Peace reiterated its commitment to promoting peace-building initiatives, not only within marriages but also across communities and broader social environments.
Through its various programmes, the Organisation aims to foster healthy relationships, conflict resolution, and sustainable family values.
OHP however enjoined young individuals to always prioritize character over wealth when planning for marriage, emphasizing the importance of choosing partners who possess the fear of God, compassion, and a sense of responsibility.
It also condemned the growing trend of forced marriages, where parents impose decisions on their children for personal or material gains, warning that such actions often lead to long-term emotional distress and broken homes.
“Marriage is a lifelong journey, not a temporary gathering. It is a future investment that must be approached with careful consideration and proper background checks. Where necessary, professional organisations can be engaged to provide guidance and verification,”
The Organisation urged couples and intending partners to strive to be assets in their relationships rather than liabilities, noting that this mindset is essential in preventing domestic violence and building harmonious homes.
The Organisation for Harmony and Peace calls on all stakeholders,families, religious leaders, counsellors, and government agencies,to join hands in addressing this growing concern and promoting a culture of peace, love, and mutual respect in society
