The Yewa South Local Government Education Authority in Ogun State has lauded Hands of Solace Foundation for supporting primary education in the state.
The commendation followed the foundation’s distribution of school materials to over 400 primary school pupils in Oke Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area, on Thursday.
The Head of Department, Academic and School Services, Yewa South Local Government Education Authority, Mrs. Ogunleye Adedoyin, gave the commendation while receiving members of the Hands of Solace Foundation in her office on Thursday.
It was gathered that the foundation had earlier visited some primary schools in the area, where it distributed hundreds of books and school bags to pupils to support their education.
While addressing the delegation, Adedoyin lamented that many primary school pupils in the area are in need of philanthropic support because most of their parents are too poor to provide them with textbooks, notebooks, and school uniforms.
She also noted that some pupils who have books lack school bags to protect them, forcing them to use nylon bags, which often damage their books, especially during the rainy season.
According to her, some schools in the area still lack enough chairs for students to sit, adding that although the Ogun State Government is making efforts to improve infrastructure, philanthropists need to complement these efforts, particularly in reaching remote communities.
She encouraged Hands of Solace Foundation to continue its support for education in the area and appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to partner with the foundation to make education more accessible in remote parts of Ogun State.
Earlier, the Spokesman of the foundation, Segun Adekoya, told journalists after the distribution of materials that the initiative was meant to complement the efforts of the Ogun State Government in ensuring that every child, especially in remote areas, has access to quality education.
He explained that Hands of Solace Foundation is a non-governmental organisation made up of young Nigerians from different professions who have come together to give back to society from the proceeds of their hard work.
Adekoya noted that Yewa South Local Government was deliberately chosen for the intervention because their research indicated that parental attitude toward education in the area is relatively low and needs to be improved.
He added that the foundation has more projects lined up to boost education in the area.
“We just introduced ourselves to the community, and we are already working on acquiring acres of land in the area to build both primary and secondary schools so that students can have access to free education,” he said.
“We are young Nigerians pooling our resources together to support this dream, and we encourage influential Nigerians to join hands with the foundation to make this vision a reality,” he added.
Also speaking, the Head Teacher of YSLG Primary School, Mrs. Popoola M.A, appreciated the foundation’s gesture, stating that the materials came at the right time and would go a long way in encouraging both students and parents to value education.
Teachers and students from the schools visited also expressed their gratitude and urged the foundation to continue its good work.
