Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has stressed the need for both Muslims and Christians to promote unity and embrace peace during the holy month of Ramadan which coincided with Ash Wednesday, marking the commencement of sacred season of Lent
The Vice-Chancellor made the call in her separate messages to both Muslims and Christians Communities on campus as they commenced their fasting periods respectively on the same day
Ramadan according to her, is a sacred period of deep spiritual reflection, self-discipline, sacrifice, and compassion.
He urged Muslim faithful to take advantage of the renewed opportunity being provided by Ramadan period to strengthen their faith, promote tolerance, and uphold the values of love, kindness, humility, and peaceful coexistence that bind the campus together as one university community.
"As we observe this season of fasting and prayer, I encourage all members of our community to embrace the spirit of unity, mutual respect, and empathy for one another. May this holy month inspire us to recommit ourselves to excellence in teaching, learning, research, and service to humanity, while fostering harmony within and beyond our campus"
"I pray that Almighty Allah grants us the grace to fully reap the spiritual rewards of Ramadan, answer our prayers, and blesses our university with continued progress, peace, and prosperity", she prayed
Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor extended greetings to Christian faithful on campus to use the sacred season of Lent, which she described as a period of spiritual renewal to pause, reflect deeply on their relationship with God, rediscover life’s true purpose, and realign their values with His will.
" It invites us to examine ourselves honestly and grow closer to Christ through prayer, fasting, and self-denial"
The Vice-Chancellor called on Christians to use Lent season, to reflect on the authenticity of their service to one another, to the university, and to the fulfillment of its noble vision
"As members of this academic family, we are challenged to embody not only intellectual excellence but also compassion, humility, and genuine care in our daily interactions".
"I therefore urge every one of us, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ, to embrace this season with intentional acts of charity, fervent prayer, and sincere introspection. Let us seek ways to strengthen the bonds of unity, promote kindness, foster inclusivity, and uphold the dignity of every individual within our university", she admonished
