NUT Rates Percentage of ICT Literate Teachers Higher In Ogun Than Nigeria's 60% Digitally Illiterate Teachers In Basic Schools

Ogun State wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) says almost 100 percent of teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state are computer literate, contrary to the nationwide low statistics of digitally literate teachers in public primary schools as given by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). 

UBEC in the report in the media on August 14, 2025, expressed concern that a significant portion, 60%, of teachers in Nigerian public primary schools lack the digital literacy skills necessary for effective teaching in an increasingly digital world.

The lack of computer literacy among teachers according to the commission, 

is a major obstacle to integrating technology into education and preparing students for a technology-driven future

But the Secretary of Ogun State wing of NUT, Comrade Samson Oyelere in an exclusive interview with Edu-biznews in Abeokuta, ahead of this year's celebration of the World Teachers' Day on Sunday, October 5, said the pathetic situation in the country was not the same in South West geo-political zone, particularly in Ogun where almost the entire aspect of education sector are being digitalized including the lesson notes being used by teachers in the classrooms and dossiers for the academic records of the learners 

under the Ogun State Education Revitalization Agenda (OGSERA) digital platform where the parents can access the results of their children in anywhere in the world 

He described the disturbing data of 60 percent teachers lacking digital skills in public primary schools in the country as a serious indictment on UBEC, raising questions on how the agency has been utilizing fund meant for training and retraining of teachers in the basic education sector in the past years before now..

"I will just say specifically as far as Ogun State teachers are concern . I can speak for them that close to 100 percent of teachers in both basic schools and senior secondary schools are computer literate"

"Aside the union's efforts on training and retraining of teachers on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) , we also have Ogun State Government's involvement in training and retraining of teachers. During the just concluded holiday, more than 60 percent of teachers attended training. We have smart classrooms in both primary and secondary schools in Ogun State, if they (teachers) are not computer literate how will they operate in such digitalized learning environment", he stated
