The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has allayed the fears of school owners whose candidates will be writing the May-June 2026 Computer Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), saying the examination council will be using Centre Based Model for conduct of the examination and not School Based Model, so as to reduce the financial burden of acquiring computer system for every candidate
There have been fears among school owners on the need for schools to have required number of computers for their candidates as pre-condition for being recognized as Centres for the conduct of CB-WASSCE
But the Ogun State Branch Controller of WAEC , Dr. Ayobami Subaru allayed the fears in a interview with newsmen on Wednesday during a roadshow organized by the council to sensitize parents, guardians and other stakeholders on the importance of preparing their children for the examination
The State Branch Controller led other WAEC officials on the road show from Onikolobo and Computer Village at Ibara to major markets and motor parks in Panseke, Kuto, Sapon, Itoku and, Lafenwa areas of Abeokuta, the state capital
He explained that with the introduction of Computer Based WASSCE for final year students in Senior Secondary School in Nigeria, the examination council would be making use of near-by Computer Based Centres in all the schools
"We will be making use of Computer Based Testing Centres located in Ogun State to conduct the examination. We are moving from a School Model Exam to a Centre Based Model, so schools don't need to have computer for the number of candidates they have in their schools before candidates can write the exam," he stated
Candidates according to him, will posted to CBT Centres closest to their respective schools, to avoid additional financial burden of transportation cost
The State Branch Controller who said the examination council had conducted four series of CB-WASSCE since January 2024, expressed confidence that the examination council would conduct hitch free examination based on the number of innovations put in place to address the challenges of Internet connectivity and electricity
He added that the introduction of Computer Based WASSCE had assisted the council in reducing drastically the number of cases of malpractices, saying every candidate is being monitored real-time through Closed Circuit Television CCTV to checkmate any form of cheating during the examination
The WAEC State Branch Controller however advised parents and guardians to invest seriously in Computer Education of their children to enable them compete globally among their peers in the era driven by Artificial Intelligence AI
He urged students to devote more time to academic pursuits to excel in their examinations
Similarly Senior Assistant Registrar, Omotola Olasunkanmi expressed excitement over large turn out of concerned parents and guardians making inquiries on the CB-WASSCE
She said the road show had assisted the council in reaching out to several people using various dialects in Yoruba and other languages including Hausa, Igbo and Ibibio
The introduction of Computer Based WASSCE, she stated had reduced malpractices by more than 80 percent because of measures put in place including the use of biometric to checkmate personation and ensure authenticity of the candidates for the examination
She added that the two-day road continues on Thursday in Ota where large of prospective candidates for the examination are located
