Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) has stressed the need for the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration to immediately issue an official circular as government on the usage of Hijabs by Muslim female learners in public schools across the state, as part of moves to formalize the policy
The State Muslim Council in a communique issued by its Secretary-General, , Asiwaju Kamal'deen Akintunde made the call at the end of the council's general meeting held on Sunday, 10th August 2025 (Safar 16th, 1447 A.H) at the Ijebu Ode Central Mosque Hall, presided over by Professor Habeeb Oduye, Vice President General of the Council and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan
OMC in the communique, also
appealed to Imams and heads of Qur’anic schools to integrate vocational training and formal subjects into their curriculum and to support initiatives aimed at addressing the challenge of out-of-school children in the State.
The Council in the communique, equally urged Muslims to participate fully in the forthcoming continuous voter registration exercise, while advising officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct themselves with fairness and integrity.
It also endorsed the bill before the National Assembly aimed at increasing women’s participation in politics, describing it as a necessary step to enable women to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Council resolved to work closely with the League of Imams and Alfas to engage political parties, aspirants, electoral bodies, and civil society organisations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Muslims within the bounds of the law and criticised what it described as the unfair distribution of religious programmes on publicly funded broadcast stations in the state, calling for urgent corrective measures.
On the matter of the Awujale of Ijebu land, the Council cautioned against spreading the notion that the throne is vacant, explaining that while Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona has passed, the institution of the Awujale remains revered and eternal.
The meeting further ratified the commencement of the process to appoint a new President General of the Council.
It announced the constitution of an eleven-member committee, chaired by Barrister Lawal Orisadare with Barrister Mariam Ogunmoye as secretary, to review the organisation’s constitution.
At the meeting, the Council offered special prayers for the late Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Adetona, describing him as a visionary leader whose contributions to the establishment of the OMC and the growth of Islam in Ogun State would remain indelible.
The meeting which has members from Egba, Remo, Ijebu and Yewa zones attracted prominent individuals including His Royal Highness, the Moyegeso of Itele-Ijebu, Alayeluwa Oba (Engr.) Mufutau Ade Kasali; former Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry and Asiwaju Adinni of Yewaland, Alhaji Ali Ajibode; CEO of ARON Contractors and Afolasadini of Ijebuland, Otunba (Engr.) Fatahi Arowolo; and former Ogun State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Lateef Dele Ogunsiji, among others.
The Ogun State Muslim Council concluded the meeting by pledging to work with stakeholders to promote the welfare of Muslims and foster peaceful coexistence in the state.
