The Non Academic Staff Union Of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU) has suspended its planned five days warning strike expected to begin this Wednesday, 12th of March at all state branches of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Nigeria , following the non-payment of the arrears of the N30,000 wage award agreed with the organized labour since last year's September to cushion the effect of high cost of transportation fares occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria
The union had on Monday , 11th of March,2024 issued the warning strike notice to the management of the examination council to immediately begin the payment of the six months outstanding arrears of the N30,000 wage award to its workers or face the industrial action
But the union later announced the suspension of the industrial action in a notice to workers on evening of the Tuesday , after the last minute meeting with the management of WAEC at its Headquarters at Yaba in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial city
The Head of National Office of WAEC in the notice signed by the Acting Director of Administration of which a copy was obtained by Edu-Biznews, agreed in the tripartite meeting with leadership of NASU to pay the outstanding arrears on monthly basis
The management agreed to immediately begin the payment of N5,000 in each of the months which must be completed by 31st of August , 2024.
It will be recalled that workers at the African Sub-regional examination council were only collecting N25,000 each in the past six months,contrary to the N30,000 agreed with the leadership of NASU and organized labour in the country
