WAUG :LASU's Director of Sports Emerges 1st VP (WAUSF), As School's Contingent Finish In Top Nine Positions






The Director, Sports and Recreation,   Lagos State University, Dr. Segun   Olawunmi has emerged as  1st Vice President for the West African University  Sports Federation (WAUSF), just as the university's contingent to the 2023 West African University Games held at the Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, finished in the top nine positions with eight medals including two gold, two silver and four bronze in the just concluded West African Sub-regional sports festival for universities 

The election into various executive positions was held recently at the Conference Hall Annex, ACE Building, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where the West African University Games (WAUG)  Championship just ended 


Below is a look at the comprehensive list of the new executives that will pilot the affairs of the regional university sporting Federation for the next four years:

*1.SHAIBU IBRAHIM TANKO (MR)-PRESIDENT*

*2.OLAWUNMI SEGUN ABIODUN (DR)-1st VICE PRESIDENT*

*3.TIMOTHY K MENSAH(MR.)-2nd VICE PRESIDENT*

*4.PAPA SERIGNE DIENE (MR)-GENERAL SECRETARY*

*5.BALOGUN YETUNDE(MS)-TREASURER*

*6.BOLUWAJI G. JAYESIMI(DR )-ASSISTANT SECRETARY*

 The university's  athletes competed in basketball, athletics,  table tennis, and lawn tennis. 


Over twenty-two (22) universities from various universities in West Africa took part in the Championship. LASU placed 9th on the final medals table, while the host, OAU finished in 5th position with five gold, two silver and seven bronze at the festival won by University of Ghana with 21 medals including 10 gold, eight silver and three bronze 





The Championship was held between Saturday, 16 and Friday, 22 December 2023.

The West African University Games (WAUG), also known as the ECOWAS students games is a multi sports event between student athletes from West African Universities.

The first edition of the competition was held in 1965 at  Nigeria's premier university,  University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
