Ogun State Government has advocated for establishment of social and economic empowerment scheme, as part of measures to lift up victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the state
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development ,Hon. Adijat Adeleye made the call in Abeokuta, at an Extended BI-Annual meeting of Gender Based Violence Response Network Team(GBVRN) and Dissemination of Prohibition of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment Policy in Tertiary Institution, organised by Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with United Nations Population Funds.
Adeleye pointed out that government was poised to provide succour by ensuring that survivors were trained and provided with necessary tools, to enable them stand on their feet and not be discriminated against.
She reiterated the present administration’s stance for Zero to GBV, saying public enlightenment and sensitisation were on ongoing in schools, including tertiary institutions and communities, to eliminate the pandemic.
"The Ministry will not rest on its oars and shall continuously strengthen operational ties with both governmental and Non-Governmental Organisations", she said.
In his goodwill message, the Coordinator, Child Protection Network, Ogun State Chapter, Barrister Damola Lapite, appreciated government for the support and commitment towards ensuring the reduction of GBV in the state, calling on government to seek justice for survivors, thereby encouraging victims to speak up.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Oluwaseyi Sokoya, assured that government was committed to ending GBV in the state, as some victims had become shadows of themselves, making it difficult for them to trust the opposite gender.
He enjoined stakeholders to have a collective front in shaping a safer and more equitable world that would bring an end to violence in the society.
