All Estates Must Submit To Building Regulations-Ogun Govt Tells Property Owners

Ogun State Government has asked owners of estates to ensure that all buildings within their development comply strictly with town planning laws and regulations, which include, obtaining planning permits, authorisation to commence construction, stage-to-stage certification of building constructions, as well as certificate of fitness-to-use.

The Acting General Manager (AGM), Ogun State Building Production Management Authority, Engr. Olakunle Olaniran, gave the warning during a two-day monitoring and enforcement exercise that covered Sango-Ota, Itori, Ibese, Kobape, Ilisan Remo, Ilara road, Iperu Remo and Ogere.

Olaniran, who stated that the exercise was in collaboration with the Central Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, noted that developers of the estates had earlier been invited to a meeting, but decided to embark on the enforcement exercise due to their poor responses.

"This exercise has shown that even elites, who should know better, are still contravening the laws. The fact that an estate is fenced does not mean that it has built-in compliance to the laws. All buildings, whether inside an estate or not, must have planning permits, building authorisation, stage-to-stage certification and certificate of fitness to live", he said.

The AGM further disclosed that sensitisation would be a continuous process, noting that the enforcement exercise would ensure compliance with laws guiding the built industry.

A total of 46 residential buildings within two estates in Sango-Ota were served contravention notices, while six commercial buildings and three residential buildings, which had earlier been served contravention notices were sealed.
