Residents and transporters have protested over the deplorable condition of the major access road to Prof. Wole Soyinka Train Station at Olokuta community in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital
The protesters in a peaceful demonstration on Saturday in front of the train station complex walked down to the major access road at Olokuta area of the city, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with various bold inscription such as " Prince Dapo Abiodun Our Able Gov You Are Our Hero, " "We Need Total Rehabilitation Of Our Road In Olokuta", amongst others to draw the attention of Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently fix the road which is at the complete state of disrepair
Secretary of the cab operators plying the road, Bisi Ogundipe lamented over the poor condition of the road which according to him, is causing serious damage to their vehicles and adding to the cost of transport fares being charged to commute passengers on daily basis to the train station
" The condition of the road is seriously affecting our operations because people are not comfortable using the road to access the train station , if they are moving out of Abeokuta to either Lagos or Ibadan, so we are pleading with Governor Abiodun to urgently come to our rescue", he stated
Also Chief Ezekiel Olusola speaking on behalf of Baale of Erunwo Olaloko community, narrated the ordeal of the residents within Olokuta area on the road, citing two instances when a student and pregnant woman lost their lives in road crashes as a result of deteriorating condition of the road
"This is only access road to this train station, we need the attention of the Ogun State Government to help us reconstruct the road", he pleaded
Similarly two of the residents, Alaba Tunde Folarin and a female resident, Moradeyo Lanrewaju decried the sorry state of the road, saying it has destroyed economic activities of people in the area, since it longer motorable for customers to come into the area for business activities "we are seriously appealing to both President Bola Almed Tinubu and Governor Abiodun to jointly assist us on this road since we have the train station and Housing Estate that belong to the Federal Government here
According to Folarin, the community had spent more than N20million carrying out palliative on the road and can no longer bear the cost of fixing the road
They called on both the Federal and State Government to save the soul of the community by urgently fixing the road to prevent further loss of lives and prosperity as well as damage to their vehicles
