Former Director Of the Ogun State Sports Council, Prince Tunji Onatolu has expressed concern over the bad condition of mainbowl at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta and other sporting facilities in the capital city, ahead of maiden Egba Unity Cup football tournament for the male under 13 and under 15 teams holding between this Tuesday 23rd of August and 1st of September, 20222
Onatolu at a presscomference organized by Egba Football Union in Abeokuta on Friday, to herald the commencement of the competition for the six local government areas in Ogun Central, pleaded with the State Government to give more priority to development of sports at the grasssroots by giving urgent attention to fixing of facilities at the stadium and others at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja area of the city
He described sports as the greatest avenue for government to curbe youths restiness and generate jobs through harnessing of abundant raw talents in the young Nigerians
"The State Government should please give more priority to the development of sports through fixing of sporting facilities in the state to discover and nurture talents in competitions such Egba Unity Cup U-13 and U-15 male football", he pleaded
It will be recalled that Gateway United Football Club owned by the Ogun State Government and Abeokuta Stormers FC had been stopped by the organizers of the second tier Nigeria National League NNL from using the mainbowl of the MKO Abiola International Stadium because of the unsuitable condition of the pitch for league matches
While Gateway United FC are now using Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode for their remaining home matches , Abeokuta Stormers FC are playing their home matches at private facilities in Ikenne-Remo, Remo Stars Stadium
Addressing sportswriters on behalf of the organizers of the maiden Egba Unity Cup, Mr. Opeoluwa Osoba revealed that two teams from each of the six local government areas from Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Ewekoro, Ifo, Obafemi-Owode and Odeda would be participating in both U-13 and U-15 respectively
He added that the screening and draws for the participating teams would hold on Monday, 22nd of August while preliminary matches for three teams in each of the two groups will be holding Tuesday (August 23rd) and Friday ( 25th August 25th) at the Muda Lawal Stadium Asero in the city
According to him, the semi-finals will be played on 29th of August while third place match was slated for 30th of August while final match and closing ceremony for the competition will hold on 1st of September at the same venue
There will also be special seminar for coaches on 31st of August at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta
