Ogun State House of Assembly has charged Zonal Education Officers in the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to redouble their efforts, at ensuring effective assessment and supervision of public schools across the State.
Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Ademuyiwa Adeyemi gave the charge during the ongoing second quarter budget performance assessment of Ministries, Departments and Agencies at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Adeyemi and other members of the committee stressed the need for the Zonal Education Officers, especially those in the rural areas, to always provide accurate and up-to-date information about all schools under their jurisdiction to the supervising Ministry for the formulation of appropriate plans to address their needs.
The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu in his response, told the lawmakers that the Ministry had just launched an online real-time database platform tagged: Ogun State Education Revitalisation Agenda (OGSERA), that would provide details of pupils in both government primary and secondary schools including electronic dossier and online attendance for efficiency and transparency.
Arigbabu added that the launch of the platform which gave a distinct identification number to all learners had earned Ogun accolades in the comity of States, saying there were plans by its peers to understudy the scheme.
Speaking on the peculiarities of the platform, the Commissioner explained that new entrants and students seeking transfer into government-owned primary and secondary schools would be issued with new identification numbers to checkmate the illegal registration of students for terminal classes and also qualify them for examinations such as West Africa School Certificate Examination.
In another development, the committee tasked the management team of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), to always ensure strict adherence to accounting procedures, towards achieving proper classification of revenue and expenditures in its budget report.
The lawmakers also appraised the budget performance reports of the Ministry of Justice, State High Court, High Court of Justice, Judicial Service Commission, Customary Court of Appeal and Teaching Service Commission.
Others whose budget performances were appraised included Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas Institute, Oni, Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, Sikiru Kayode Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology, Omu Ijebu, State College of Health Technology, Ilese, Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, among others.
