Lecturers in public polytechnics in Nigeria on Monday eventually embarked on a 2-week warning strike just like their counterpart in the university system, to compel the Federal Government to respond to their demands
Co-ordinator of the South West Zone of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Engr. Yekini Nureni who made this known to Edu-Biznews in an interview, said that union was left with no option than to begin the Industrial action after several meetings with government failed to agree on the demands of members
He listed the demands to include,
“none release of the approved revitalisation fund for the sector and
none release of arrears of the new minimum wage running into 10 months
ASUP also accused government of
none release of the reviewed normative instruments for institution/management and programmes accreditation, non-compliance with approved retirement age, non-deployment of approved salary structures, poor governance structure as well as other issues affecting standards, particularly in state-owned Polytechnics.”
The union alleged government of violating the Polytechnics Act as amended in 2019..
Edu-Biznews recalled that ASUP last Friday, May 13,2022 declared its Intention to embark on a nationwide, following the failure of government to implement the agreements reached with the union
