Ogun Restructures Training In Technical Colleges To Meet Industries' Demands

Ogun State Government has revealed its plan to rebrand and restructure its eight technical colleges in response to the demands of industries operating  in the State 

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu  said that the Institutional Development Plans (IDPs) of the colleges would be revised

Arigbabu speaking  in Abeokuta at the presentation ceremony of IDPs by the State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB) in partnership with World Bank, posited that the initiative would help produce technical and competent manpower needed by the various industries.

Arigbabu reiterated the passion and unwavering commitment of the government to revamp and reposition the education sector as a whole to be a model for other states to emulate.

“This exercise will ensure a well-coordinated and focused rebranding of the state-owned technical colleges towards ensuring the mandate of OGSTVEB in producing technical and competent manpower needed by the various industries in the state”, he explained.

The Commissioner urged all stakeholders to be committed to promoting the cause of education and socio-economic development of the State.

In his address, the Board Chairman, OGSTVEB, Barr. Yomi Siwoniku revealed that industries were approached to recommend courses in line with their demands to achieve the desired results of developing relevant and required skilled subjects, which led to the constitution of the College Implementation Committee (CIC).

Siwoniku said the development would not alienate existing courses, but rather enhanced them, saying the new plan would also provide an enabling training environment for over 2,000 young people through formal training and 17,000 women and youths in the informal and non-formal sector within the next five years.

In their goodwill messages, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Technical education, Prof. Joseph Odemuyiwa and his counterpart in Primary and Secondary education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo opined that the development of technical education would bridge the gap of unskilled labour and tackle unemployment among youths

They  stressed the need to encourage dual education training, which would allow for 60 percent practical session and 40 percent theoretical aspect.
