Ogun Govt To Punish Residents Over Dumping of Refuse On Roads Median, Other Undesignated Places

Ogun State Government has asked residents to stop dumping of refuse on  roadsides, medians, waterways, and drainages, warning that any body caught in the act would be punished inline with the environmental laws of the state

The Special Adviser to  Governor on Environment and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya who issued the warning in Abeokuta, urged the residents to assist government in the implementation of the ongoing waste management reforms in the State, by cooperating with the private waste collectors assigned to their areas for collection and proper disposal of their wastes.

Oresanya was speaking during the State Waste Management Stakeholders meeting with Community Development Associations (CDAs), Central Development Councils (CDC), and Market Leaders in Abeokuta North and South Local Government Areas.

He noted that it was essential for households, commercial and industrial outlets in the State to make use of the waste receptacles placed at designated areas, enjoining them to patronise the Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for collection and proper disposal of their wastes.

“While many residents have complied with the ongoing waste management reforms which mandate households, commercial and industrial outlets in the State to patronise PSPs operators assigned to their areas for collection and proper disposal of their wastes for just a token, some unruly individuals are still unyielding despite several moral persuasion for them to comply”, he said.

The Special Adviser enjoined market leaders to ensure cleanliness of market surroundings, saying the State government was not pleased closing down markets because of sanitation issues, however, it would not allow them to continue with their bad and illegal habits, especially the elites who dump their wastes indiscriminately.

Responding, the Chairman, Abeokuta Local Government CDC, Mr. Kazim Ajagunjeun praised the State government for its determination to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in public places, encouraging residents to pay the government-approved waste managers promptly
