Ogun State House of Assembly is strongly considering an upward review of the 16 percent allocation to the education sector, as the 2022 Appropriation Bill of N350.74biillion scaled through second reading on Thursday
Speaker of the State Assembly, Right Honourable Olakunle Oluomo gave the indication while reacting to various contributions of members, during the debate on the bill at their plenary
The House Majority Leader, Yusuff Sheriff who moved motion for the second reading of the bill and the Education,Science and Technology Committee Chairman, Hon.Ademuyiwa Adeyemi and others had raised concern over the allocation for the education sector , stressing the need to increase budgetary vote for education, considering the urgent needs for provision of more fund for infrastructural development in public schools
Most of the members including Deputy Majority Leader, Abdul Oladunjoye, Hon.Bukola Sobukanola, Hon.Ganiyu Oyedeji,Hon.Daisi Elemide, Hon.Solomon Osho, Hon.Damilola Soneye, Hon.Kemi Oduwole,Hon.Sola Adam, Abayomi Fasuwa appreciated the focus of the budget on completion of inherited projects and other infrastructural development
Oluomo addressing the members during the debate, urged them to look at the N56billion allocated to the sector and make more fund available for more teachers and provision of infrastructure in public schools
“I still want us to look at education sector’s allocation and give attention to both human and material resources in the sector, we need more teachers in public schools and facilities “, he stated
The speaker lauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for focusing on completion of the ongoing projects and initiate others would create more jobs and improve the revenue profile and economy of the state
Oluomo however cautioned the State Internal Revenue Service OGIRS and other revenue generating agencies of the State Government ,against over burden the people with tax, alternatively he enjoined them to identify appropriate quarters to bring in more revenue to fund the budget
He later referred the bill to the Appropriation and Finance Committee for further legislative consideration
The governor had last Tuesday, presented the budget estimate to the house for approval and consideration, with N170 billion allocated tor the capital project, to funded mainly capital receipt-internal and external loans, grants and aids estimated at N124.56billion, N153.17billion expected from OGIRS and Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government while only N73billion is projected from statutory allocation
Meanwhile the speaker has directed the heads of MDAs to be ready to begin the defense of various budgetary allocations as from 13th of December to end on the 23rd of December
