Residents of Eruwon Laloko in Olokuta, the host community of the Abeokuta Standard Gauge Train Station named after Nobel Laurette, Professor Wole Soyinka have decried the deteriorating condition of the major access road which recently claimed lives of a Senior Secondary School two student and a pregnant woman
The student simply identified as Ishie Ijeomaka of Victorrotti Private School according to eye witness, was killed on his way home last Wednesday by a truck driver who suddenly lost control
.
Scores of residents in a peaceful demonstration on Saturday in the area, displayed placards with various bold inscriptions seeking the urgent attention of both the Federal Government and Ogun State Government to fix the road, so as to prevent further loss of lives
Addressing newsmen on behalf of the members of the various communities numbering 52, Chairman of New Eruwon Laloko Lawure Community Development Associations, Mr. Tunji Oduleye described the Eruwon Laloko Road as death trap which requires immediate attention by government at all levels, given its economic importance as the major access road to the Abeokuta Standard Gauge Train Station constructed by the Federal Government to boost transportation system and enhance business activities
He lamented that many people had sustained various degrees of injuries causing permanent damage to their bodies arising from several crashes because of the terrible condition of the road
Also speaking, Chairman of the Central Community Development Association in Oba in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Imam Seidu Olabode who is a member of the Senatorial and State Council of CDA, appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to carryout palliative measures on the road pending the construction of the road by the Federal Government
.
Chairman of the Palliative Committee who doubles as the treasurer of the CDA in Eruwon Laloko Olarotimi Okeleye revealed that over N10million already spent on making the road motorable, saying the worst condition of the road is now beyond the community to permanently fix the road
Similarly the pioneer Chairman of the CDA in new Eruwon Laloko, Chief Oluwaseun Akiyode and the Baale of the Community, Chief Ganiyu Abass in their seperate remarks said several efforts were made to draw attention of the State Government who sent its top officials from the Works and Infrastructure Ministry and that of Public Works Agency to inspect the road and promised to rehabilitate it before suddenly making U-Turn saying it is responsibility of the Federal Government because of the train station located in the area.
The road according to them, is a five minute drive to Oke-mosan state Secretariat,an alternative route to Idi-Aba, Abeokuta for Civil servants
They added that the road links Kobape,Siun areas on the outskirts of Abeokuta,the Ogun State Capital
