NPFL: Rivers United Defeat Abia Worriors 1-0, Top Table

Rivers United continued with its impressive run in the new football season, after beating host, Abia Worriors by a lone-goal on Saturday, to move to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with six points from two matches.

The defeat further threatened the  quest of the Abia Worriors for the league title in the 2020/2021 season, having lost their first match to highly rated Enyimba International of Aba in the local derby played last week. 

Fortune's 19th minute goal, ensured that the Pride of Rivers secured another maximum three points in the day-two match of the Nigeria's top flight league played away in Aba.

The match can be best described as a dress rehearsal for the Port-harcourt based side,who will be taking on Bloemfontein Football Club of South Africa in the return leg of the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday.

The Stanley Eguma tutored side won the first leg of the continental tie in South-Africa by two/nil forth-night ago, before opening their campaign for domestic league title with another lone-goal victory at home against Enugu Rangers few days later.

The remaining matches for day-two of NPFL,will be played this Sunday (today) between Lobi Stars and MFM of Lagos in Makurdi, Warri Wolves and Adamawa United in Oghara. Sunshine Stars and FC Ifeanyi Ubah in Akure while Dakkada take on Jigawa Golden Stars in Uyo.

Also Enugu Rangers who lost their opening match to Rivers United, will be at home to entertain Akwa United of Uyo, at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu, Wikki Tourist host Pleateau United of Jos in Bauchi, Kano Pillars and visiting Katsina United trade tackles in Kaduna while Heartland will be at home in Owerri against Nasarawa United of Lafia.

The match in Ilorin, between Kwara United and Enyimba International of Aba had been shifted to January 20, to enable the Coach Fatai Osho tutored side prepare for their second round return leg encounter in the CAF Champions League, against El-Merrik of Sudan in Aba, Nigeria, having lost the first leg by three/nil in Sudan.
