Ogun State House of Assembly has expressed concern over encroachment of landed properties belonging to public schools by individuals, suspected to be land grabbers in the state.
The lawmakers also called on the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to beef up security in various public schools, to ensure a safe learning environment for the pupils .
The house raised the concern on Friday while considering the 2021 budget estimate of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) at the its complex in Oke-mosan, Abeokuta the state capital.
They charged the board to swing into action towards reclaiming the encroached landed properties of primary and secondary schools across the State.
Some of the members including the Deputy Speaker, Dare Kadiri, Deputy Majority Leader, Abdul Bashir Oladunjoye as well as Honourables Modupe Mujota, Akeem Balogun, Olusola Adams and Wahab Haruna, described as worrisome the activities of land grabbers who encroached on public schools' landed properties and erected private buildings.
The lawmakers enjoined the Board to engage the service of So Safe corps to complement the operations of the security agencies in ensuring discipline and preventing the cases of kidnapping which has become the order of the day in schools in Nigeria
They also asked SUBEB to rehabilitate more schools across the State, especially in the rural communities, while urging the Board to look into the imbalance in the posting of manpower, with a view to addressing acute shortage of teachers in the rural areas of the State.
Responding, the board's Chairman, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi noted that SUBEB was committed to ensuring safety in all school having engaged the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.
The board according to him, has also raised the bar of administrative and academic performances of students and teachers.
He presented a total budget of N2.3billion, out of which N1.4billion was meant for capital projects, while recurrent expenditure would gulp N915million with an expected revenue target of N10.1million.
Also the Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission, Olalekan Ifede, presented a total budget estimate of N22.7billion, consisting of N19.9million for capital projects, while recurrent expenditure would gulp N22.7billion with an expected revenue target of N1.6million for next year.
The lawmakers also considered the budget proposals of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, D.S Adegbero Polytechnic, Itori, Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Igbesa and Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago-Iwoye.
