Ogun Assembly Speaker Wants FG To Take Over Teachers' Salary

 Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Olakunle Oluomo has asked the Federal Government to  take over teachers' salary in both primary and junior Secondary Schools, under the Universal Basic Education programme in Nigeria.

 

He also called for the encouragement of vocational practices to empower the youth to be self sufficient.

Oluomo made the call on Thursday   while responding to questions from participants at the 'Ogun Civil Society Conversation with Mr Speaker' organised by the State Chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, the state capital.

The speaker explained that the taking over of such responsibility, would reduce the financial burden on local government councils .

Oluomo  identified factors hindering the effective implementation of the State Child Right Law to include poverty and lack of sensitization amongst others.

He stressed the need for proper education of every child and establishment of vocational education to empower youths with the needed skills to reduce the rate of unemployment and poverty in the country. 

Oluomo  lamented  the negative effects of poverty   and incessant cases of excessive child abuse and labour in the nation.

The speaker assured  that the Assembly would partner with the executive arm for the speedy consideration and subsequent passage of the newly proposed Law Review Commission bill.

He explained that such legislations upon passage and assent by the governor would review necessary operational laws with a view to including present realities at ensuring efficient and effective laws in the State.

Oluomo also promised that the house would  immediately begin the process of reviewing the State Anti-Land Grabbing Law, 2016 to expand its modus operandi with a view to addressing emerging challenges in the operations of the law to curb the excesses of criminal elements under the guise of land grabing in the State.

He added that efforts were in top gear by the State Government to ensure the immediate take-off of the Amotekun Security Network, with an assurance that the Ninth Legislature would continue to engage necessary stakeholders in the passage of enabling legislations to promote and protect the rights of the people to aid good governance.
