Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), has asked State Governments in the country to strongly consider the upward review of welfare packages for Teachers as proposed by the Federal Government.
President Muhammadu Buhari had last October 5, during the celebration of the 2020 World Teachers Day in Abuja, announced a new special salary structure for Teachers to further motivate them in the country.
Registrar of TRCN, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, who made the call on Sunday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital while speaking with newsmen, said that state governments should be ready to implement the new special salary scale, since education is on concurrent list.
"Since education is on the concurrent list, state governments should be ready for the smooth implementation of the new policy",he explained.
Ajiboye added that the new salary scale and other welfare packages for Teachers were already being worked out for implementation by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of Head of Service of the Federation.
"Presently, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of Head of Service of the Federation are working out modalities for the implementation of the presidential approvals", Ajiboye revealed.
The council's registrar expressed confidence that the best brains would be attracted to the teaching profession in Nigeria while experienced ones would also be retained, when the new special salary structure is fully implemented at both federal and state levels.
According to him "The president’s approval cut across new salary structure for teachers, their retirement age, teaching practice allowances for both lecturers and pre-service teachers, bursary awards for education students and rural housing scheme for teachers, among others".
The TRCN registrar stressed the need for government to give priority to the welfare of Teachers, to encourage them and improve the quality of teaching in the country.
“As quality education is essential to the development of any nation, so also the welfare of teachers, so as to enhance their performance and encourage impactful teaching",he stated.
The issue of teachers’ welfare in Nigeria according to Ajiboye, "has been downplayed over the years.
"While it is true that we need the police to control crime in our society, we also need teachers to eradicate crime and criminality in our country,” Ajiboye said.
