A cademic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has lamented over non-recognition of teaching among other professions in Nigeria as Teachers celebrated the 2020 World Teachers' Day.
Ogun State Chairman of ASUSS, Comrade Akeem Lasisi while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Abeokuta, the state capital, described as worrisome, the non-recognition of Teachers seen as father of other professions in the society.
Reactiing to recent upward review of the Salary- scale for Teachers by President Muhamedu Buhari, Lasisi insisted that the increase was not enough to appreciate the effort of Teachers who had impacted on many lives.
"No nation can rise above the literacy level of its citizenry, so Teachers are likened to a proverbial broom used to tidy the society and kept in a corner of a room."the ASUSS boss stated .
We( Teachers) deserved to be recognized just like any other professions and the society should appreciate our efforts in the country.
Teachers according to him,deserve to be given national recognition considering their enormous contributions to the nation's development.
The ASUSS also faulted the proposed plan by government to increase retirement age of Teachers to 65 from 60, saying such would worsen the unemployment rate in the country.
He asked government to look at the proposal critically before making such policy statement and implementing it to avoid confusion in the system.
