October 12 Schools Re-opening: FG Gives Fresh Guidelines



The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has  released fresh guidelines,ahead of the October 12 date fixed for reopening of schools nationwide.

The presidency had issued directive for the reopening of schools , following the advice  by the PTF on the reducing rate of the pandemic in the country .

 National Coordinator of the taskforce, Dr Sani Aliyu, at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, said the fresh guidelines were developed by the PTF in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education  and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
Aliyu explained that, “Schools and educational bodies that plan to reopen must have detailed communication protocols that include parents, school health teams, school authorities and local state officials.

According to the fresh guidelines“The Schools must also have a system for providing regular updates for parents, staff and relevant authorities, as well as communicate changes to procedures effectively.

He added that “Specifically, school authorities have the responsibilities to ensure that everyone gaining access to their schools is screened properly".

The guidelines stressed the need for Schools with boarding facilities to have identified areas screening for Covid-19 to quickly detect students who are positive and prevent the spread of the virus  “Boarding schools must have identified areas for screening and putting positive students aside."

The PTF National Coordinator explained that“There must be appropriate waste management systems."

“Health facilities that are within the schools that serve the schools should have the ability to cater for an outbreak and a response protocol must be in place for these schools for students who test positive.”, he concluded on the guidelines for Schools reopening.
