Nigeria @ 66: True Independence Demands Systemic Reform , Just Leadership And National Renewal

 *
As Nigeria marks the 66th anniversary of her independence, the Organisation for Harmony and Peace (OHP) extends heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. This historic occasion is both a celebration of our national resilience and a solemn moment for reflection on the realities confronting our nation.

We express profound gratitude to Almighty Allah for preserving Nigeria despite decades of political, economic, and security challenges. At the same time, we acknowledge the deep pains endured by millions of citizens who continue to grapple with poverty, unemployment, insecurity, inflation, inadequate infrastructure, and declining public confidence in governance.

Nigeria remains Africa's most populous nation, richly endowed with abundant natural resources, immense human capital, and extraordinary potential. Yet, despite gaining political independence on 1 October 1960, many Nigerians still experience economic hardship and institutional weaknesses that raise fundamental questions about the true meaning of independence. Genuine independence is measured not merely by sovereignty, but by justice, accountability, economic prosperity, and the protection of human dignity.

Islam teaches that leadership is a sacred trust. Allah, the Exalted, commands:*

"Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to those entitled to them and, when you judge between people, judge with justice. Indeed, excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Surely Allah is Ever-Hearing, Ever-Seeing." (Qur'an 4:58)

This divine injunction establishes justice, integrity, and accountability as the foundations of good governance.

*Regrettably, Nigeria has witnessed a recurring pattern in which many political actors merely move from one political platform to another without fundamentally changing the system of governance. The faces may change, but the structural deficiencies often remain. Sustainable national development requires comprehensive institutional reforms rather than superficial political transitions.*

Democracy is not merely the conduct of elections; it is the continuous protection of the rights, welfare, and aspirations of the people.

*The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) warned:*

Any leader who is entrusted with the affairs of the people and dies while deceiving them, Allah will forbid Paradise for him. (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

This profound Prophetic guidance reminds every public office holder that leadership is a moral responsibility before both the people and Almighty Allah.

*Political leadership must therefore be driven by service, transparency, competence, and accountability rather than personal ambition, political patronage, or self-interest.*

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), Section 14(2)(b) unequivocally provides that:

*The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government*

*Furthermore, Section 16(2)(d) mandates the State to pursue policies that ensure adequate shelter, food, healthcare, and welfare for citizens.*

Similarly, Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) recognises every person's right to an adequate standard of living, including food, clothing, housing, healthcare, and essential social services.

These constitutional and international commitments place a solemn obligation upon governments at all levels to prioritise the welfare, dignity, and security of every Nigerian.

*Nigeria's greatest challenge is not merely the emergence of new political leaders but the urgent need to reform the institutions, policies, and governance structures that shape national development.*

Therefore, meaningful reform should prioritise, comprehensive agricultural development through modern mechanisation, subsidised farming inputs, improved food security, and strategic food reserves.

Sustainable social welfare programmes that protect senior citizens, vulnerable persons, and low-income families.

Affordable housing initiatives accessible to ordinary Nigerians rather than limited segments of society.

Massive investments in electricity generation and distribution, rural infrastructure, healthcare, education, and industrial development.

Strengthened anti-corruption institutions, transparent public financial management, and strict accountability across all levels of government.

*Ethical reorientation that promotes honesty, patriotism, discipline, and fear of Allah among both leaders and citizens.*

As the renowned Islamic scholar Shaykh Abul A'la Maududi aptly observed:

The real transformation of society begins not with changing rulers, but with reforming the values and conduct of the people.

*When leaders recognise that they are accountable before Allah, and citizens embrace integrity, patriotism, and lawful conduct, corruption, oppression, and abuse of power will gradually diminish.*

The Organisation for Harmony and Peace (OHP) urges all Nigerians to reject despair and embrace responsible citizenship. National progress requires collective commitment from government, civil society, religious institutions, traditional leaders, the private sector, and every patriotic citizen.

*Our diversity should remain a source of strength rather than division. Justice should prevail over oppression. Competence should replace mediocrity. National interest should supersede personal ambition.*

Nigeria possesses all the resources necessary to become one of the world's leading nations. What remains indispensable is visionary leadership, institutional integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice and accountability.

As we commemorate Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary, we pray that Almighty Allah, grant our leaders wisdom, sincerity, justice, and compassion, strengthen our institutions with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Protect Nigeria from insecurity, corruption, injustice, and all forms of national adversity.

*Bless our farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, professionals, security personnel, and every citizen with peace, prosperity, and abundant opportunities.*

Unite Nigerians across religious, ethnic, and political differences in the spirit of mutual respect, national cohesion, and shared progress.

*Guide our beloved nation towards sustainable development, enduring peace, and lasting prosperity.*

*Nigeria's future can indeed be brighter, not through empty rhetoric or symbolic political changes, but through genuine systemic reform founded upon justice, accountability, constitutional governance, and the fear of Almighty Allah.*

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Signed:

 *Ustadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, AAN*
*President, Organisation for Harmony and Peace (OHP)*

 *Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare.*
