Lagos State University has secured the approval of National Universities Commission (NUC) for offering of new academic programmes including Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information and Communication Technology, Music Education and Social Studies Education
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof.Ibilola Olatunji-Bello who revealed this during a press conference heralding weeklong activities marking the combined 29th and 30th Convocation Ceremonies of the institution holding on Monday August 17, Tuesday August 18 and Wednesday August 19, also says a 1,500- bed Hostel seen as the largest accommodation facility in the history of the school facilitated by TETFUND is being constructed at a cost of N4 billion, to accommodate growing student population with the new courses being offered
She listed other new academic programmes to include Advertising, Development and Communication Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Film and Multi Media Studies, Broadcasting, Information and Media Studies, Public Relations, Strategic Communication, Entrepreneurship, Film Production, Tourism and Hospitality Management
"In addition, Special Education, Library Science, Architecture, Fine Arts, Linguistics, Taxation, Communication and Media Studies have secured full accreditation and passed resource assessment reflecting the University's commitment to responding to emerging national and global manpower", she stated
The Vice-Chancellor attributed the second consecutive emergence of LASU as most subscribed institution in Nigeria attracting over 84,000 applications in the 2026 admission process, to the commitment of the university to conducive environment for learning, teaching and research, going by the massive investment in digital infrastructure and other enabling physical facilities on campus
According to her, the University sustained its rich academic tradition with delivery of twenty (20) inaugural lectures across diverse disciplines, providing platforms for professors to share the outcomes of years of scholarly research and intellectual inquiry
She acknowledged some of the achievements of her administration as outgoing Vice-Chancellor to include outstanding academic fears of alumni of the university, particularly the historic success story of Miss Aminat Yusuf who became the first graduate to attain a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.00 and named the 2026 Rhodes Scholar for West Africa, securing one of the world's most prestigious postgraduate scholarship to the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom
The Vice-Chancellor maintained that the university would continue to invest significantly in research, innovation and digital transformation, saying LASU is not about only generating knowledge but also developing practical solutions to the challenges of an increasingly technology driven world
The University's convocation activities will officially commence on Friday, August 14 with Colourful Coconut Breaking and Cultural Day by the alumni members at the main gate at 9:00 am while the Convocation Jumat service holds at the University's mosque, where members of the Muslim community will gather to offer prayers for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the institution
A total of 20,604 students across the two academic sessions of 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 will be graduating with diploma, first degree and postgraduate degree from the Lagos State University in the combined 29th and 30th Convocation Ceremonies
