Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello has commissioned a newly
constructed Handball Court Spectators’ Gallery at the University's Sports Complex on the main campus, Ojo, Lagos
The new project is part of the moves to further strengthen sports development and enhance spectators’ experience within the institution.
The facility was generously donated by the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji -Okuneye, a former Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Lagos State University, and a distinguished alumnus of the institution.
Speaking at the event, the Director, Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA), Professor Rafiu Okuneye, noted that the project was facilitated through the efforts of the Directorate as part of its commitment to strengthening stakeholder engagement and institutional development.
He described the project as a significant contribution to sporting excellence and institutional growth.
He noted that the gallery would improve comfort for spectators while boosting sports development within the University.
Professor Okuneye commended the Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), for her generosity and appealed for proper maintenance of the facility to preserve its value for future generations.
The donor in her remarks, described the occasion as deeply emotional, noting that handball remains her “first love” and a sport she has always held close to her heart.
She expressed hope that the spectators’ gallery would encourage greater participation in sports, improve spectators’ experience, and help nurture talents that would bring honour to the University.
Reflecting on her personal journey, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) described Lagos State University as more than an institution, but the foundation upon which her academic and professional life was built.
“LASU is not just an institution to me; it is my academic birthplace, my professional foundation, and my intellectual home,” she said.
Professor Lafiaji -Okuneye further described the spectators’ gallery as a modest token of appreciation to her alma mater and generations of mentors, colleagues, and students who shaped her journey.
She stressed that the responsibility of building great institutions should not rest on government alone, adding that universities thrive when alumni, stakeholders, and benefactors embrace the culture of giving back.
Delivering her address, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello , appreciated the donation and averred that the facility represents legacy, service, institutional pride and commitment to youth, and sports development.
The Professor of Physiology praised Professor Lafiaji -Okuneye's longstanding contributions to the University and acknowledged LASUDA for facilitating the successful delivery of the project, and strengthening stakeholder engagement.
Professor Olatunji-Bello, thereafter officially commissioned the Handball Court Spectators’ Gallery and led other members of management of both institutions (LASU and LASUED), and guests on a tour of the facility.
The event concluded with an exhibition handball match between LASU and LASUED teams, showcasing healthy rivalry and collaboration between both institutions.
The Chairman, Lagos State University Sports Council, Professor Simeon Dosunmu delivered the vote of thanks.
