Officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment have visited Our Lady of Apostles Girls’ School, Ijebu-Ode, following another gas leakage incident reported in the area.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, who led the delegation, said the State Government had commenced investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote cause of the leakage, noting that gas supply systems within the affected zone had been shut down as a precautionary measure.

Dr. Oresanya, explained that the area lies within a fracture zone that is prone to seismic activity, which may have contributed to the incident, revealing further that about 60 students from various schools across Ijebu-Ode were mildly affected by the incident.

He stated that the affected students were stabilized with oxygen and were advised to keep handkerchiefs damp and use them to cover their noses in order to minimize exposure.

“To forestall further incidents, the State Government has deployed monitoring equipment around the affected schools and commenced vegetation clearing within the aea. Officials of gas pipeline operating companies and relevant environmental agencies have also been contacted for immediate intervention,” he said.

Dr. Oresanya assured parents and residents that the government remained committed to ensuring the safety of students and their teachers, while working diligently to prevent any disruption to the academic calendar.
