Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT has expressed worry over the continuous barrier preventing public primary school teachers who are degree holders from rising to pinnacle of their career in the Ogun State Public Service
The union described the situation as anomaly which must be corrected for the teachers to be at par with their counter-part in Lagos, Oyo, Kwara, Edo, and numerous other States of federation where public primary school teachers can ascend to Grade Level 17.
Chairman of the State wing of NUT, Comrade Sewakanu Noah Oladipupo raised the concern on Sunday in Abeokuta, during the celebration of the 2025 Teachers Day
The union appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to make pronouncement on the removal of the barrier to further encourage teachers in public primary schools to do more to enhance the quality of teaching
The State NUT Chairman who appreciated various intervention and initiatives of government at uplifting the standard of basic education in the state, also pleaded with the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration to extend 50% subsidy on Ogun State Health Insurance scheme being enjoined by those in the state civil service to teachers in public primary schools
The State NUT urged government to address the issue of consequential adjustment of the basic salary under the Contributory Pension Scheme based on the already draft submitte
"It is a known fact that workers’ basic salaries form the bedrock for calculations under the newly commenced Contributory Pension Scheme. This is a psychological factor tied to workers’ effectiveness and morale. Having dutifully submitted the workers’ draft (to increase workers Basic Salary through consequential means) as graciously requested by Your Excellency
during the last impasse, it is our fervent belief that you will nod in affirmation to celebrateTEACHERS who are the very architects of all minds that are shaping our nation’s future"
The union reminded government on the need to appoint new Headteachers General replace those who retired from the public service while calling for institutionized reward system to encourage teachers who lost their lives in active service
The State NUT Chairman however acknowledged the approval of year 2023 and 2024 Promotion which according to him, is being financially backed and
letters released to all eligible Teachers.
The union appreciated the construction of Smart Schools across the four divisions of the State, saying it is a great step in modernizing learning infrastructure
"Provision of laptops to STEM Teachers and supply of modern classroom equipment, thereby advancing digital literacy and effective pedagogy.Payment of Running Cost that is now running etc", the union lauded
Representing Governor Dapo Abiodun, his deputy Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele promised that the present administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of teachers to further motivate them and enhance the quality of teaching in public primary and secondary schools.
She pledged to deliver the demands of teachers to the governor for necessary action
