Ogun State chapter of Academic Staff Union of Secondary School (ASUSS) has pleaded with Governor Dapo Abiodun to temper justice with mercy and consider the recalling of Principals of both junior and senior schools of Ilugun High School,Elega, Abeokuta, suspended over alleged collection of illegal fees from learners, leading to wild protest and destruction of facilities within the school premises
State Chairman of the union, Dr. Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa who made the passionate plea on Sunday in Abeokuta during the celebration of the 2025 Teachers' Day, also commiserated with
the parent of the child that got drowned in the river, praying God against recurrent of such ugly incident
The union appealed to government to intervene in the case of one of the teachers in the school, Mr. Majekodunmi who was attacked by students while on duty "We strongly appeal for state intervention, justice, and care"
ASUSS therefore appealed to government to always ensure prompt release of running costs to schools to avoid the temptation of collection of illegal fees while stressing the need for adequate security to prevent the breakdown of law and order
"We strongly appeal that running costs for all our Principals be constant and paid promptly, so they can serve their purpose at the right time"
"We appeal for tightened security in our schools, with stronger collaboration between security agencies and school administrators"
ASUSS also called for uniformity in the payment of salaries to teachers in secondary schools, irrespective of their Bank accounts to avoid distress and agony such unpleasant experience usually caused affected teachers
"In the past few months, salaries have not been received at the same time across all banks. For this very month, despite your kind approval for salary payments, teachers banking with *GTB, WEMA, and STANBIC* are yet to be paid", the union decried
"Furthermore, some of our members are still being owed two months’ salaries. Many of them have cried to the Union, unable to meet their family obligations. Your Excellency, you will agree with us that a labourer deserves his wages promptly, for hope deferred makes the heart sick", the union further lamented
The State ASUSS Chairman also demanded for payment of N5,000 palliative arrears, laptops, electronic lesson notes, other digital teaching aids, housing schemes,functional cooperatives, prompt promotions, pensions, and gratuities amongst others that are critical to motivate teachers to give their very best in classrooms
The union however commended the Prince Abiodun's administration for its commitment to e-learning, digital classrooms, and ICT in schools which has positioned Ogun State as a forward-looking state
The recruitment of additional teachers under OgunTEACH scheme according to the union, has helped reduce hitherto acute shortage of teachers in schools while distribution of exercise books to learners has eased the burden on parents and improved learning outcomes
ASUSS later presented award to Governor Abiodun represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele in appreciation of the government's commitment to the quality of education in the state
Representing Governor Dapo Abiodun, his deputy Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele promised that the present administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of teachers to further motivate them and enhance the quality of teaching in public primary and secondary schools.
She pledged to deliver the demands of teachers to the governor for necessary action
