OgunSUBEB Chairman Advocates For Phonic Based Approach In Teaching

Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, has charged teachers to adopt the phonics-based approach as a tool for promoting academic excellence.

The Phonics based approach is to improve the reading and writing abilities of pupils in basic schools

Ifede gave the charge during the resumption monitoring exercise for the first term of the 2025/2026 academic session, while also supervising ongoing projects in public primary schools across the three senatorial districts of the State. He emphasised that teachers must work assiduously to ensure that learners are able to read, write, and communicate effectively.

“Basic education is for every pupil to know how to read, write, and communicate effectively. Every Nigerian child is entitled to free and qualitative basic education. So, it is a task that must be done,” the SUBEB boss stressed.

He highlighted the need to introduce children to sound-based learning from pre-nursery and nursery classes up to Primary 2, noting that such an approach would make reading and writing much easier by the time learners advance to Primary 3 and higher classes.

The Chairman also encouraged teachers to deploy effective and engaging teaching methods, build pupils’ confidence in reading and redouble their efforts to deliver on expectations, adding that the state government, under Governor Dapo Abiodun, will not tolerate the danger of out-of-school children.

 

“The vision of Ogun SUBEB is to ensure that all pupils in primary schools are able to read, write and communicate very well. Go out and do your enrollment yourself. Prove to them that public primary schools in the State have something to offer,” Ifede charged.

He further advised teachers to strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders in the education sector, including School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), Old Students’ Associations, Parents’ Clubs, and host communities to ensure the holistic development of schools.

         

 In their separate remarks, Mrs. Omoyisola Olabode, Headteachers of Owu African Church School 1, Ita-Iyalode, Abeokuta North, and Mrs. Shakirat Akinwunmi of St. James’ Anglican Primary School, Iperu-Remo, commended the Board for the visit, pledging to fully implement the directives.

Schools visited during the monitoring exercise included: Our Saviour Anglican Primary School, Italawajoda, Ijebu-Ode; Moslem Primary School, Okun-Owa, Odogbolu; UBEC Model Smart School, Ikenne-Remo; St. Paul’s Anglican Primary Schools I, II & III, Makun, Sagamu; St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, Siun, Obafemi Owode; Lisabi Model Nursery and Primary School, Ita-Agemo, Igbein, Abeokuta; St. Peter’s Primary School, Joga-Orile, Yewa North Local Government; and Yewa North Local Government Primary School, Oja-Odan, among others.
