SEMA Calls For Flood Preparedness In Ogun

Following the prediction of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on flood alert this year, the Acting Director of the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OGSEMA), Mr. Soji Durojaye has stressed the need for early action and community involvement to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding, especially as the rainy season peaks with negative impact in the most recent experiences in some areas in Lagos State and Niger States 

Durojaiye made the call on a live radio programme, saying that the agency had already instigated sensitisation campaign in vulnerable areas, educating residents on clearing of drainages, avoidance of indiscriminate waste disposal and relocating from low land to higher grounds.

He highlighted the proactive steps taken by OGSEMA in collaboration with Local Governments and relevant ministries to reduce flooding in the State.

“Our goal is not only to respond to floods but to prevent avoidable damages by ensuring that people are informed and prepared, we have put in place emergency response teams alert across the 20 Local Government Areas in the State." he said.

He stressed that flood risk maps and early warning systems had been activated with NiMet, forecasting a higher quantity of rainfall this year, assuring citizens that the agency was in constant communication with Local Authorities.

Mr. Durojaye added that flood management was a shared responsibility where Government agencies have their roles, as well as the residents also need to play their part, adhere to flood warnings alerts  and act accordingly.

 

He advised Community Development Associations (CDAs) and traditional leaders to support advocacy efforts at the grassroots level and reiterated the agency’s commitment at safeguarding lives and property, while reassuring continuous public engagement through media and community outreach.
