Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, a Visitor to Lagos State University (LASU),Ojo has applauded the recent feat of the institution for topping the list of preferred universities in Nigeria, as announced by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB), during the 2025 admission exercise
Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr Oreoluwa Finnih, expressed Sanwo-Olu's excitement at a one day certification training for Deans, Directors and Students of the high-riding citadel of learning, held at the Senate Chamber of the university
The Visitor to LASU was excited by the feat and commended the management, staff and students of the university, describing the news as very heartwarming.
Dr Finnih stated that the government was working hard to take SDGs to the doorsteps of millions of residents in the State through orientation as well as partnerships and collaboration.
The Special Adviser who gave LASU a thumbs-up for her steady roadmap and strides in SDGs, noted that no government singlehandedly around the world could do the job alone, hence, she called for partnerships and collaboration from the academia, corporate world, philanthropists, and organisations.
Declaring the training open, Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, represented by her Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi, noted that the University had taken a big leap by incorporating SDGs into the institution's processes and operations.
She said the SDGs were addressing the multidimensional problems facing the world and expressed happiness that the University was in the forefront of applying the 17 SDGs into its processes as well as operations.
"This certification training is for the Deans, Directors and students. This is a training-the-trainers programme and they can go back to their faculties, departments, and discuss with their staff and colleagues, in order to key into the activities of the SDGs", she added.
She ended her address, saying LASU remains the only SDGs compliant university in the country. Afterwards, she declared the training open.
One of the facilitators, Associate Economic Affairs Officer, United Nations Economic Commission For Africa, Dr Farzana Sharmin, observed that Africa had made enormous progress in its efforts at achieving the SDGs, based on the 2025 Africa Sustainable Development Report Progress, but believed a lot still needed to be done.
"I recommend investment in skills, youth education, leveraging solidarity through cooperation, mobilisation of finance and strengthening partnerships," the UN top official posited.
The UN Official ended her address, advocating for strengthening of institutions, for sound economic governance, investment in data infrastructure, and the use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
The Director, LASU SDGs, Professor Tayo Ajayi, in his welcome address, informed that the training was for learning and bringing SDGs closer to the participants.
"Today, SDGs have become part of the rating for universities. LASU is the number one SDGs compliant institution in Nigeria. The University has been invited to two events, one in New York, United States of America (USA), in October and another, later in the year, Europe, based on its SDGs related activities,"he added,
Similarly, Assistant Director, LASU SDGs, Professor Teslim Ojuromi called for greater partnerships, collaboration as well as capacity building from the academia, governments, Civil Liberty Organisations, Non Governmental Organisations, institutions and others, saying this would go a long way in advancing the gains of SDGs.
He noted that there were huge opportunities, especially, which stakeholders could tap into and would go a long way in making a huge difference.
Another Assistant Director, SDGs, LASU, Dr Olayemi Soladoye, presented a paper, while the Administrative Secretary, Mrs A.M Okonji gave the vote of thanks.
Other principal officers including Registrar, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Academic Staff Establishment, Mr Samuel Otesanya, Bursar, represented by the Deputy Bursar, Mr Taiwo Omoyin and the University Librarian, Dr Omawumi Makinde attended the event
The duo of Deputy Registrar (Vice-Chancellor’s Office), Dr Lateef Shekoni and the Deputy Registrar/Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Lateef Salami were also in attendance.
