President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged Nigerian graduates to continue to seek for new knowledge, embrace new challenges ahead of them and strive for excellence in every endeavour.
President Tinubu who was represented by Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad gave the charge during the 36th convocation ceremony of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos held at Dr. Philip Adegbite Sport Complex.
He reminded the graduating class of 2022/2023 session to see learning as a lifelong journey
"You must therefore, continue to seek out new knowledge, embrace the challenges ahead, and strive for excellence in every endeavour", he said
"The world is full of opportunities, and you are well prepared to explore and seize them. "Let the education you have received here serve as a beacon, guiding you to make a positive impact"
" The skills and expertise gained at Yaba College of Technology are not just tools for personal advancement, but instruments for national growth and transformation, therefore use them to foster innovation, drive entrepreneurship and promote social progress
President Tinubu encouraged them to be determined while reiterating his administration's commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda for the education sector
"We are committed to providing enabling environment for productivity in tertiary institutions through funding and infrastructural support", he assured
He added that apart from Tetfund and the Needs Assessment Programmes which are on- going in the institution, Nigera Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was also established to provide financial support to students.
President Tinubu noted with gratitude that the students of Yaba College of Technology have distinguished themselves in various fields, earning accolades for their achievements in academics, sports, arts and community service among others.
Therefore, he urged the graduating class as they embarked on new journey to be courageous and focus on their dreams and never stop believing in their abilities
"Do not get involved in any activity that will tarnish your image, your family and that of Nigeria."
President Tinubu however commended the institution for the significant milestones in the area of entrepreneurial development, which according to him is playing a crucial role in Nigeria's drive for job creation and economic growth.
Tinubu lauded the College 's commitment to fostering entrepreneurial skills among it's students has greatly enhanced the nation's capacity for innovation and self reliance.
" I encourage today's graduates to build on this strong foundation and leverage your acquired skills for professional growth and societal impact", he charged them
Also speaking, the highly elated Chairman Governing Council, Prof. Funso Isolaowa Afolabi, described the event a significant milestone in the academic journey of the graduands , charging them to see education as a lifelong journey.
He advised them to embrace innovation, and strive for excellence.
" You are the future leaders of Nigeria's technological and socio-economic transformation, and we have every confidence that you will rise to the challenge of shaping the future of our nation", he stated
Similarly, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul had earlier described the celebration as a testament to hard work, resilience, and vision.
"Our graduands are the embodiment of this institution's legacy, a legacy rooted in excellence, innovation and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. I have no doubt that you are ready to conquer the world driven by technology, innovation, and an insatiable hunger for progress as you are stepping out into the world that is rapidly changing".
The Rector reminded the graduands that success in the 21st century is not just about knowledge, it is about availability, adaptability, collaboration and vision.
"Technology will involve, industries will transform , and the problems of today will give way to the challenges of tommorow," therefore he charged the graduands to be curios, bold and ethical
He stated that the 77 year-old Yaba College of Technology, maintained and sustained her ranking as the best Polytechnics in the country for the 6th consecutive years.
Award of fellowship of Yaba College of Technology were conferred on two notable individuals, Nigeria's first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and Speaker of House of Representatives, Right Honourable Tajudeen Abbas for their immense contributions to the institution and the country at large
Responding to the conferment as a Fellow of Yaba College of Technology, Senator Oluremi Tinubu expressed her gratitude to the Governing Council of the institution for the honour bestowed on her
The First Lady represented by Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Public Affairs and Strategy, Hon. Wahab Alawiye King described the award as a challenge that would continue to inspire her efforts to uplift others for the greater good and development of the nation.
" It is my firm belief that it is a collective responsibility of everyone to prepare the young ones for tommorow. This is one of the reasons why, I initiated various charities over the years including, The New Era Foundation that birthed The Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition and produced the One day Governor event, The Musical Youth Fiesta Initiative that led to the Leadership Academy for Girls (a mentorship programme) among others.
The new Fellow awardee of Nigerian premier tertiary institution , Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in pursuant of her vision to promote education of students donated the sum of Fifty Million Naira (₦50,000,000.00) as an endowment fund for the overall female best student of Yaba College of Technology.
However, Senator Oluremi Tinubu dedicated the award to every young girls who dares to dream.
A total of Eight Thousand, One Hundred and Thirty- Nine (8,139) graduands have been trained by their various departments. Out of which Three Hundred and Sixteen (316) passed with Distinction, Two Thousand, Three Hundred and Eighty-One (2, 381) graduated in Upper Class while Three Thousand Nine Hundreds and Thirty Nine (3,939) students are graduating in Lower Credit and One Thousand Five Hundred and Three (1, 503) are in Pass grade.
