A Professor of Adult Health Nursing, Prisca Adejumo and Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Ndagi Al-Hassan have stressed the need for first set of 22 graduating students from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Chrisland University Abeokuta, to embrace digital technology, particularly the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)for more efficience service delivery in the health sector
The duo gave the charge separately on Monday during an oath taking ceremony and formal induction of the first set of graduating students of Nursing Sciences Faculty into the nursing practice by the Nursing Council, organized as part of 6th Convocation ceremony for the 2023/2024 set of Chrisland University in the Ogun State capital
Prof.Adejumo deliverying her paper as guest lecturer on the theme of the induction " From Novice To Expert : Nursing Dynamics In The Era of Digital Technology", emphasized the need for fresh graduands to be digitally literate in their nursing practice to be relevant globally in the health sector, saying the world is moving from paper to digital in various aspects of medical practice
The Dean , Faculty of Nursing, University of Ibadan also encouraged the graduating students to continue to learn and acquire additional skills in nursing practice, noting the importance of improving on clinical skills in the treatment of patients
The don who nurtured the pioneering students as former first dean of the University's Faculty of Nursing Sciences in 2019, equally urged the graduating students to always sent career goals and move closer to successful senior colleagues for "Mentorship", so as to enable grow in the nursing practice
Also speaking, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria who was represented by Timbuak Yamai while inducting the graduating students with administration of the oath into the nursing practice equally emphasized the importance of continuous education for personal development
He stressed the need for them to embrace innovations in digital technology to enhance their practice, saying nursing comes with a great responsibility in the handling of patients in the hospital
According to him, nursing is a blend of skills and compassion , mutual respect for others
Similarly the State Commissioner for Health, Dr.Tomi Coker who was represented by Deputy Director of Nursing at Oba Ademola Hospital, Abeokuta, Mrs Sherifat Aminu urged them to always uphold the dignity of nursing practice which is about passion and demonstrating empathy for others, caring for people
She enjoined them to stay back in the country to build a strong heath system for Nigerians to have confident in the sector
Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof.(Mrs.) Chinedum Peace Babalola described the Nursing as the fastest growing academic programme which later transformed to a Faculty of Nursing Sciences with three programmes "Medical/Surgical Nursing", "Maternal and Child Health"and "Community Health Nursing
She lauded the guest lecturer (Prof. Adejumo)for playing a key role in the transformation of nursing programmes to a faculty, saying Chrisland University was able secure 100 percent accreditation by both National Universities Commission NUC and Nursing and Midwifery Council when the students were still in the 300 level
The Vice Chancellor was full of appreciation to the Board of Trustees of the university led by the Chancellor and Chairman, High Chief (Dr.) Mrs Winifred Awosika for the support given so far which has made nursing programmes a major strength of the institution that contributed to 40 percent of the current student population on campus
On the 6th Convocation of the university holding on Tuesday, 29th of October, 2024 inside its main auditorium, she revealed that 185 students will be graduating with 25 finishing with First Class Honours, 94 in Second Upper Class Division, 49 in Second Class Lower Division while remaining 17 are graduating with Third class
She revealed Omodehin, Adeola Oluwasemilore from the Department of Psychology with CGPA of 4.99 as the best graduating student of the 2024 set
The Vice-Chancellor who was speaking earlier at earlier press conference held, recalled her achievements in the past seven years of the nine-year old university, saying the institution has witnessed tremendous growth in enrollment from just seven students in 2017 from two colleges now expanded to four colleges listed as College of Arts, Management and Social Sciences (CAMASS), College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CONAS), College of Basic Medical Sciences (COBAMS) as well as College of Law (COLAW) and Faculty of Nursing Sciences
According to her, all the 24 academic and professional programmes being run by the university had been fully accredited by NUC and relevant professional bodies , adding that students of the institution have continued to record 100 percent performances in their various professional examinations
"Students of the Computer Science Department recently recorded a 100 percent pass in the EC-Council's Cyber Security Examination, which included the Certified Ethnical Hacker and Certified Network Defender "
"Students presented for the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria( MLSCN) First Professional Examination on 23rd October, 2024, had 100 percent pass with distinction across all levels of the examimation in Written, Clinical Laboratory practical and Viva voce ", she stated
On Wednesday, there will be valedictory programme for the Vice-Chancellor who is exiting after seven years of being in charge of the university while thanks giving holds on Thursday, all holding at the institution's main auditorium at 10am
The Chancellor of the university, High Chief (Dr) Mrs. Winifred Awosika in emotional ladened voice was full of appreciation for the immeasurable contributions to growth of Chrisland University in the past seven years
She urged the graduating students, particularly the newly inducted students from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences to make the good use of the quality training acquired in the school to go and make the difference in the nursing practice
Six first class graduating students from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences were later presented with special gifts by the guest lecturer and pioneer dean,Prof. Adejumo
